The Medical Laboratory Technician performs various tests in the fields of clinical chemistry, hematology, blood banking, serology, and urinalysis to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of various clinical conditions. The Medical Laboratory Technician sets up cultures, performs Gram's stains and otherwise assists in microbiology procedures. The Medical Laboratory Technician collects blood specimens by venipuncture, heel or fingerstick, and radial artery puncture, records and reports test results appropriate for age, sex, and diagnosis, assists in record keeping, performs quality control, and performs preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment as assigned and fellows all safety policies and procedures. The Medical Laboratory Technician is familiar with the LIS in all aspects of patient test ordering and resulting. He or she can access the HIS for patient information and the anatomic pathology information system for pathological results or reports when necessary.
- ASCP -BOC certified within 6 months with first exam completed within 3 months of hire, with certification verified within six weeks of exam.
