You might know what to do if you saw someone choking. You might even know how to administer CPR if someone had a heart attack. But would you know how to help someone in a mental health crisis? Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an international certification program that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The training helps you identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and addictions. There is also a curriculum designed specifically toward mental health for teens. This position will give you that teaching opportunity.

The MHFA Coordinator/Outreach Worker will have working knowledge of mental health, onset of mental illness, childhood development, and crises typically experienced by youth. This position will seek to increase awareness of MHFA training, increase the number of MHFA training sessions available, increase the number of overall trainings completed, and increase the number of educators and community members trained. This position is responsible for maintaining all inventory associated with MHFA and submitting request for materials as needed. Additionally, this position is responsible for maintaining all other trainers’ certifications and tracking training requirement to maintain certification. The MHFA Coordinator/Outreach Worker will schedule and organize all trainings, handle all registrations and cancellations, and when applicable provide all adult and youth MHFA trainings. It is the responsibility of the MHFA Coordinator/Outreach Worker to ensure that all requirements listed in the HHSC Mental Health First Aid Contract are met in addition to the other responsibilities provided by the program administrator. The MHFA Outreach Coordinator/Worker will develop and maintain relationships and partnerships with other outreach workers, school districts, education service centers (ESC Region 15), and communities to provide adult and youth MHFA, and will develop and maintain a list of contacts and make regular outreach attempts with the goal of educating and scheduling meetings and/or trainings related to MHFA. The MHFA Coordinator/Outreach Worker is responsible for collecting, aggregating, and reporting all data to HHSC. This position will work closely with the program administrator to fulfill duties and contract requirements. This position will be office and field based. Trainings require some early mornings, late evenings, or Saturdays.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, & EXPERIENCE

• Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, sociology, social work, human services, or related degree preferred. Minimum, a bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, social work, human services or related field from an accredited college or university with the following:
  • 2 years of related work experience in the behavioral health field, and
  • Experience in community outreach; and/or
  • Experience in teaching/education; and/or
  • Experience in marketing or customer service in the medical or behavioral health field.
• Experience in public speaking and presentations preferred.
• Ability to acquire and maintain certification in adult and youth MHFA (provided to selected candidate).

ESSENTIAL TASKS

• Public speaking in small or large groups
• Establish and maintain professional working relationships with co-workers, communities served, local Independent School Districts (ISD), the Education Service Centers, colleges/universities, and other community MHMR centers.
• Provide Community Outreach/Engagement to local ISDs and colleges/universities related to MHFA.
• Teaching and/or coordinating Mental Health First Aid trainings.
• Coordinates special projects related to MHFA as assigned including developing a regional plan for delivering training.

REQUIREMENTS

• Valid Texas Driver License required.
• Must not have more than 3 moving violations in the last 3 years.
• Must be insurable on the Center’s insurance.
• Must be able to pass a background check.
• Must be able to complete all MHMR Concho Valley training.

SALARY: $37,860 - $47,052.00/yr - DOE

SHIFT HOURS: M-F 8am-5pm (could be flexible as position may require some early mornings, late evenings, or Saturdays).
