Job Description
Provide leadership and management to the BSSF and its staff, provide planning and direction of BSSF work procedures; coordinate introductory teaching labs including training and oversight of graduate teaching assistants in collaboration with faculty; biosafety coordination for the entire department including regulated waste; coordinate with budget manager regarding departmental equipment repair; coordinate with assistant manager to monitor and schedule equipment/building maintenance; compliance with relevant university, commonwealth, and federal regulations, both existing and pending; delegated responsibility for the management of distribution and control of supplies, equipment and services. Takes active leadership role in Department.

Considerable knowledge of modern principles, methods, and biological instrumentation essential for research and teaching. Considerable understanding of current accreditation requirements and licensures to ensure compliance. Considerable knowledge of management and administration. Considerable knowledge of biology and laboratory safety. Ability to effectively coordinate and supervise employees, graduate teaching assistants, as well as other professional personnel, to provide quality and timely laboratory and administrative services to the department, university, and community. Demonstrated ability to establish, manage, and evaluate the operation of complex teaching and research laboratories in a modern university. Demonstrated ability to develop, evaluate, and administer laboratory objectives, policies, and procedures, and analyze and resolve technical and administrative problems. Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and customers through courteous and professional interaction. Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, exercise judgment, make decisions, and work independently.
Special licenses, registration or certification
Must be Licensed by Department of Professional & Occupational Regulation as Waste Management Facility Operator for Class Ill Facility within 6 months of employment. Must be able to wear a half mask respirator according to OSHA Requirements. Virginia Driver’s license with insurable driving record.

Considerable laboratory experience in a related scientific area, including supervisory, regulatory compliance and administrative responsibilities.

Considerable experience in a university environment. Considerable leadership experience in all aspects of the laboratory environment. M.S. in biology or related field. M.S. in biology or a related field.
