Summary:
The Middle School Dean of Students reports to the Middle School Director (or designee) and is responsible for all issues relating to the well-being of the students during their attendance at the school.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise student discipline and attendance issues.
- Schedule parent/teacher conferences in relation to discipline/attendance issues and maintain appropriate records.
- Counsels students when necessary.
- Demonstrates the Scheck Hillel values both implicitly and explicitly: Kavod (respect), Emet (truth), Chessed (kindness), Shalom (peace) and Ruach (spirit)
- Student/Parent advocate.
- Develops proactive programs to improve student behaviors, culture and interactions
- Assist in scheduling special programs and gatherings with the school administration and office of student life as related to establishing norms for expected behavior.
- Keeps the Division Directors fully informed on student issues and all other relevant matters pertaining to school life.
- Support the school and its leadership.
- Investigates hardship, neglect, and suspected child abuse cases.
- Initiates referrals to community resources (e.g., court systems, law enforcement, health care facilities, child welfare services, etc.).
- Participates in parent conferences and IEP meetings as requested.
- Creates a positive school culture by coaching faculty on how to manage behaviors through high quality instruction, strong relationships, clear expectations and positive classroom cultures.
- Helps supervise students as directed (e.g., arrivals/departures, parking lots, lunch periods, hall duty, extracurricular programs, etc.).
- Prepares and maintains accurate records. Submits reports on time. Maintains discipline records for the maximum period mandated by law and/or board policy.
- Takes precautions to ensure staff/student safety. Watch student behaviors that may indicate a problem (e.g., profanity, teasing, bullying, distress, etc.)
- Intervenes and works with staff to eliminate unacceptable behavior.
- Organizes family programming, advisory, and outreach initiatives related to the position.
- Monitors student-led committees and organizations for appropriate behavior.
- Organizes student achievement recognition programs.
- Coordinates AP, MAP, mid-term, and final exam schedules
- Participates in professional growth opportunities as appropriate.
- Strives to develop rapport and serve as a positive role model for others (students and faculty).
- Performs other specific job-related duties as directed by the Division Directors, CAO, and Head of School.
Qualifications:
Extensive experience working with students in a secondary education setting. Dean of Students or Administrator experience or similar and counseling and/or Special Ed background a plus. Ability to work with all levels of constituencies (students, parents, Administrators, faculty, staff, Board members,). Must have excellent communication skills, high develop sense of their own emotional intelligence and a keen awareness of others’ emotions, be detail oriented, and have good computer skills including word, excel, database and excellent organizational skills. Minimum of a bachelor degree in a related field. Masters preferred.
