The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary
SPPREP:
The State Pre-College Enrichment Program (S-PREP) is a free high school and college preparation program for 7th -12th grade students who reside in New York City. The long-range objective of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented minority practitioners in healthcare and STEM professions. As such, this is an opportunity designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine or related STEM fields. The program offers academic enrichment courses that are designed to prepare students for success in math and science. The program also offers career development workshops, college counseling services, field trips and college tours.
SHPEP & MEDPREP:
The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) and the Northeast Regional Alliance MedPrep HCOP Academy Program (MedPrep) are designed to support undergraduate students who are economically disadvantage and/or identify with groups that have been historically underrepresented within the health professions. The support provided for participating scholars help them to become more competitive applicants to health professions schools. Each year, SHPEP serves 80 scholars while MedPrep is offered to 20 scholars who will be rising college sophomores and juniors at the time of program participation.
Preceptor Position Details
To carry out the academic enrichment component of these programs, ODMA is seeking preceptors to lead math and science courses for assigned scholars. Program participants are students from diverse backgrounds who generally have varying skillsets and require guidance for education advancement and career exploration. The Preceptor position is ideal for candidates interested in working with students who fit the demographics previously described. This opportunity also provides a platform to exercise curriculum construction, facilitate course instruction, and establish differentiation skills. Middle and High school course offerings include Algebra, Anatomy, Biology, Chemistry, Ready for Pre-Med, and College Readiness, while the college level course offerings include Abnormal Psychology, Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, Biochemistry, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, and Narrative Medicine.
Responsibilities
ODMA Summer Program. Preceptors will be required to:
Understand the overall goals and objectives of the respective summer pathway programs.
Attend job orientation and training sessions (dates to be determined).
Prepare a course description and syllabus for assigned course based on provided guidelines.
Attend programs’ briefing and debriefing sessions as well as special program ceremonies.
Conduct meetings with Program Facilitators to discuss course progress and related feedback as well as course management updates to prepare for upcoming class sessions.
Prepare lectures and related materials prior to each scheduled course session.
Lead the execution of lessons planned for each scheduled class session and arrange for a substitute if a session must be missed.
Host office hours to meet with program scholars throughout the duration of the program.
Assist with the assessment of scholars’ academic performance by administering quizzes, exams, and assignments to gauge students’ progress with course material and related content.
Provide recommendations for program improvements.
Complete administrative/clerical duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma
Other Requirements
Affiliation with Columbia University through a graduate level program.
Education and training in science and/or mathematics.
Demonstration of leadership and organizational skills.
