Job Duties

Central State Hospital has a current opening for a Part-Time Assistant Infection Control Nurse who has the desire to assist with the care of persons with mental illness. The position will work in concert with Medical and Nursing leaders to coordinate a comprehensive hospital-wide infection prevention and control program for staff and individuals receiving services. The Infection Prevention and Control program will meet and exceed the Center of Disease Control (CDC), the Virginia Department of Health, OSHA, DBHDS requirements, as well as CMS and The Joint Commission (TJC) standards. This position will also assist in the coordination and oversight of employee health services, in collaboration with the Human Resources Department and the Employee Health Program (CommonHealth).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of hospital acquired infectious disease process and infection control in a hospital setting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Joint Commission, OSHA, CDC, Virginia Health Department standards relating to Infection Control.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct and coordinate a hospital-wide Infection Prevention and Control program. This includes policy and procedure development, staff and client education, surveillance and monitoring, data entry and analysis with graphic displays to show trends, reporting, and making recommendations, implementing plans of action, and evaluating results.
  • Principles, practices, and standards of nursing to provide care appropriate to adult and geriatric client populations with mental and physical illnesses.
Must have demonstrated ability to:
  • Make difficult decisions with authority and ownership and through appropriate consultation.
  • Resolve complex problems using data, obtaining input from others, and evaluating results.
  • Effectively use interpersonal skills to communicate, listen, resolve conflict, and evaluating results.
  • Work closely with the Infection Prevention and Control Nurse and others to maximize resources and ensure teamwork.
  • Collaborate assertively with medical staff, administrative staff, and others to ensure high standards are met, and to actively participate and in committee meetings.
  • Handle multiple priorities through time management, organizational skills, and delegation.
  • Build constructive working relationships and customer relations between disciplines, departments, and the public.
  • Effectively communicate through oral, written and electronic means to teach, investigate, intervene, report, problem solve, and maintain records.
  • Establish an infection prevention and control assessment and improvement plan.
  • The following physical requirements are necessary: repetitious walking and/or standing; bending, lifting and reaching overhead to position, restrain, transfer, transport, and/or escort clients and to perform or assist them in activities of daily living. Must be flexible with schedule and assignments and work overtime if needed. Must successfully complete TO (Therapeutic Options) Training, Motivational Interviewing, and CPR.
  • Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.
**• Require License or eligibility to practice as Registered Nurse by Virginia State Board of Nursing.
  • Require graduation from an accredited school of registered nursing.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strongly prefer National Certification relating to infection prevention and control.
  • Strongly prefer considerable experience in upper level management of inpatient infection prevention and control.
  • Strongly prefer advanced computer skills and demonstrated experience with Quality Management and Improvement.
  • Strongly prefer experience working in an inpatient setting related to mental illness or geriatric treatment.
