We have an immediate opening for an Order Writer/Buyer to join our dynamic team! This position reports to the General Manager.

Responsibilities & Duties:
  • Orders and replenishes perishable and non-perishable grocery and merchandising products through proper buying procedures.
  • Verify, correct, and track/document variances of deliveries in accordance with the company’s standard operating procedures.
  • Monitors inventory control and replenishes product based upon Haymarket’s ordering standards:
  • Ensuring product orders are timely and accurate to monitor inventory returns,
  • Managing inventory and cycle counting, and
  • Maintaining back stock levels.
  • Maintains sales potential and financial profitability by meeting and exceeding purchasing and sales targets through effective and proper procedures for prepping, storing, rotating, stocking, and merchandising products ensuring accuracy of signs and pricing.
  • Assists in organizing and developing promotional displays in accordance with company standards.
  • Promptly and courteously interacts with customers offering assistance and suggestions on products through effective selling techniques.
  • Analyzes and controls product transfers, waste, and spoilage/shrink; Document product transfers and waste and spoilage using appropriate forms.
  • Maintain backstock area and cooler ensuring refrigerated items are properly stocked and stored.
  • Develop and build relationships with vendors, manage purchase orders for accuracy and file paperwork.
  • Performs opening, mid, and closing duties as assigned.
  • Immediately reports safety hazards and violations and performs other duties as assigned by General Manager.

Requirements:
  • 12+ months retail experience in grocery merchandising, product knowledge, production, distribution, seasonal availability, and trends.
  • Previous grocery order writing and buying experience preferred in a food-centric environment.
  • Familiarity and/or willingness to learn about products, nutritional information, and other areas of study.
  • Working knowledge and application of all produce-related merchandising expectations.
  • Showcase good leadership skills to provide support to team members.
  • High energy, enthusiastic, and displays an affinity for Haymarket products, core values, and company philosophy.
  • Ability to:
    • Identify and troubleshoot issues and provide appropriate solutions.
    • Visually examine products and quality for freshness.
    • Deliver information in a clear and respectable manner to fellow team members, customers, and vendors.
    • Follow directions and procedures, effective time management and organization skills.
  • Great written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong to excellent communication skills and willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a sense of urgency.
  • Must have the flexibility to work weekends and with working hours.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Push and pull carts, weighing up to 100 pounds, unassisted.
  • Must be able to lift and carry loads up to 10 pounds regularly and 11-25 pounds intermittently during the work shift.
  • Communicate and maintain employee safety and security standards.
  • Standing/walking 6-8 hours.
  • Hand use: single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling.
  • Work requires the following motions: bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching.
  • Exposure to FDA approved cleaning chemicals.
  • Exposure to temperatures: <32 degrees Fahrenheit (freezers), 32-40 degrees Fahrenheit (refrigerators), >90 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Ability to work in wet and dry conditions.
  • Ability to use tools and equipment, including knives, box cutters, electric pallet jacks, and other heavy machinery.
  • Ability to use ladders.
