JOB SUMMARY


Performs a variety of full performance level skilled and semi-skilled duties related to the application of chemicals to plants, trees, and grass to enhance plant growth and control weeds and pests. Maintains and monitors pest control programs, to include bats, bees and rodents in compliance with EPA, OSHA, and State and Federal Regulations.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
:

Pest Control:

1. Acts as lead specialist and may provide project-by-project supervision to ensure timely completion of projects; monitors quality of work and performs field training to less experienced maintenance personnel; assists in training Parks, and Cemetery staff in pest and weed control safety and in fertilizer use applications.

2. Organizes and conducts specialized projects in pesticide applications and control to eliminate or inhibit the growth of unwanted vegetation, and for controlling rodent and insect problems in parks, drainage ditches, culverts, public roads, rights-of-way and buildings.

3. Sets up and operates hand and power spray equipment to spray, dust, and/or spread various chemicals and other designated materials including pesticides, herbicides, soil sterilant, grass killer, hormones, fungicides, fertilizers, seeds, and specified soil amendments. Orders, stores, handles, mixes, and applies pesticides in accordance with EPA, OSHA, and Federal, and State laws and regulations.

4. Identifies and chemically treats primary and secondary noxious weeds; controls rodent and insect pest populations to ensure safety of city patrons and employees; Monitors rodent traps and bait stations inside and outside of buildings; monitors bat and bird activity on City structures and removes as appropriate.

5. Maintains records on chemical application activities in compliance with EPA, OSHA and State and Federal regulations. Maintains work area, chemical storage area, and equipment in a condition that promotes good safety practices and in compliance with OSHA, Structural Pest Control Commission, and Lehi City Risk Management; performs diagnostic checks of spray rigs; calibrates spray equipment to ensure accuracy of concentration; maintains accurate records of storage site, spraying activities and monthly pesticide usage.

6. Schedules and coordinates regularly scheduled pest control activities and responds to trouble calls; serves as a front line representative between city and users regarding pest management issues. Oversees contractors; Inspects for structural pests problems; assists in maintaining Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for chemical usage.

7. Drives vehicle to transport pesticides and spray equipment to site; uses manual and computer-controlled spray rigs; cleans, services, maintains, and does minor repair work on spray rigs and vehicles; schedules appropriate herbicide applications for flood control, right-of-way, open space, mitigation sites, and park areas and monitors effectiveness of treatment.

8. Inspects sprinkling system to assure operation; identifies need to initiate various aspects of soil conditioners, surfactants, fertilizers and other programs related to the conservation and distribution of water. Maintains records of spraying activities; assures chemicals are properly stored and used in conformity with city, state, or federal regulations; operates spring equipment.

9. Performs tasks related to seasonal snow removal, flood control and other related situations that warrant emergency support

10. Participates in continuing education courses to improve expertise and job performance as approved.

11. Performs related duties as required.


RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


1. Education and Experience:

A. Graduation from high school;

AND

B. Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance, upkeep, and beautification of turf, parks, facilities and related environs;

OR

C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.


2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Working knowledge of maintenance equipment such as backhoe, loader, dump truck, mowers, tractor, power over seeders, aerators, thatchers, welders, trimmers, etc.; interpersonal communication skills.

Skill in the operation of various types of light equipment; such as gang mower, front end loader, tractor, backhoe, etc.; basic mechanics, basic electrical and plumbing operations, basic carpentry and masonry work.

Ability to recognize and identify common weeds and pests; recognize and identify diseases common to turf and greenery; effectively apply chemicals for the abatement and eradication of noxious weeds and insects; effectively perform various semi-skilled and skilled functions related to building maintenance; lift 50 pounds; communicate verbally and in writing; develop effective working relationships with supervisor, subordinates, and the public.


3. Special Qualifications:

Must possess a Utah State Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must possess a Utah State Pesticide License. Must pass pre-employment drug/alcohol test and background check. May be required to become a "Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper" (QWEL).


4. Work Environment:

Workers in this position generally perform in a physically demanding environment. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving some muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Talking, hearing and seeing essential to the performance of the job. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exists. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Frequent local travel required in normal course of job performance.
