THE POSITION: Under direct supervision an employee in this class performs routine housekeeping chores, cleaning and light maintenance duties; does related work as described. Incumbents in this job class engage in repetitive housekeeping chores and cleaning. Assignments are received in the form of written work orders, or verbal instructions. Work is performed under the direction of the Manager of Senior Housing or her designate. Incumbents are required to work odd schedule shifts,
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Cleans public areas of housing facilities; Sets up tables, chairs, podiums, and other equipment for activities; Washes windows and walls; Vacuums carpeting, steam cleans carpeting; Dusts; Maintains areas outside and around housing facilities including weeding, mowing, raking, planting, snow removal and salting; Changes light bulbs, fluorescent lamps, smoke detector batteries, and filters; Paints walls, trim and other items, stains and finishes items; Moves heavy objects, including refrigerators and flips mattresses; Performs special assignments as required.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One or two years experience or training in maintenance and cleaning; some experience in the use and operation of power equipment utilized in cleaning and grounds maintenance tasks; completion of a standard high school or vocational school course; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge’s, skills and abilities.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Some knowledge of maintenance terminology, procedures and equipment utilized in cleaning and grounds maintenance tasks; ability to operate various power equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to write legibly; ability to speak clearly; ability to get along well with others.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Michigan and good driving record. Must pass a physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
Examination: Only those applicants whose qualifications have been approved will be permitted to compete in the written examination.
APPOINTMENT and INTERVIEWS: Appointment and interviews will be made by the department head from the three highest scoring candidates certified to the Eligible Register. When there are fewer than three names, the appointing officer may elect to appoint from such names as are available. Each eligible appointed must serve a six-month probationary period before his/her appointment is complete.
