Summary:
Responsible to Trumbull Regional Medical Center for supporting the corporate mission, vision and values. Responsible to the Laboratory for performing all job duties of receptionist. Responsible to the customer for courteous, accurate, timely service.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school graduate or GED with related experience or training in medical terminology and keyboard entry skills. After orientation, up to three month’s experience on this job is required to perform essential functions.
- Previous experience with office equipment and secretarial duties preferred.
Job Responsibilities, including, but not limited to:
- Greets outpatients, processes requests by physicians for laboratory tests, clarifies orders, and obtains necessary demographic information for registration. Orders test requests received from inpatient and outpatient locations. Verifies specimens and labels such specimens assuring proper patient identification.
- Retrieves results from electronic medical record and faxes reports to physicians as requested. Reports laboratory results by telephone to outpatient and inpatient locations. Distributes reports as necessary, files requisitions, and maintains records.
- Register patients, obtains accurate guarantor information and all patient demographic information, and activates patient visits.
- Answers incoming telephone calls in a courteous, professional manner, routes requests, and transfers and receives messages and assures they are properly routed. Assists in record review for billing audits, provides requested information to Medical Records to complete submission of diagnostic codes. Oversees and organizes laboratory records (scripts, reports, requisitions) for accreditation purposes.
- Completes accessions and logs surgical specimens maintaining proper specimen identification and assuring completeness of all test requisitions. Prepares gross histology work station assuring instruments, supplies, and fixatives are available for the workday. Assists pathologist in performance of frozen section examination of surgical specimens. May weigh or measure specimens submitted. Disposes of processed tissues, sorts and files blocks. May retrieve specimens or blocks for referral to other laboratories.
- Operates equipment used in recycling histologic solvents. May assist in autopsy maintaining autopsy suite. Maintains clean work area.
- Collects, cleans, sterilizes, and distributes glassware and pipettes according to established cleaning procedures.
- Orders and stocks phlebotomy supplies and general use/utility items such as gloves, paper products, soap, and housekeeping supplies. Operates dishwasher, autoclave, oven, pipette washer and general equipment for cleaning purposes. Sorts and files slide blocks for histology.
- Delivers collected and properly identified specimens to appropriate testing area. Performs other duties as assigned.
