Job Summary:
The Payroll Accountant is responsible for balancing accounts within a company's or organization's accounting system, preparing accounting documents, schedules, and summaries. This role is responsible for ensuring the organization is compliant with federal, state, and local regulations that are relevant to the payroll taxation and reporting process. The Payroll Accountant will also act as internal payroll auditor, reviewing, evaluating and assessing the accuracy of payroll through regularly performed reconciliations and account balancing. The Payroll Accountant will also supervise two employees in the timely and efficient processing of employee expense reimbursements and Additional responsibilities include taking the lead on multiple payroll process improvement initiatives as well as serving as backup in other areas of payroll as needed. Job Responsibilities:
Responsible for the reporting and technical functions and accounting for the reconciliation of salaries and wages through to the general ledger.
Ensures that all necessary withholdings are taken from paychecks and that taxation is calculated appropriately according to federal and state laws.
Oversees two employees in the processing of employee expense reimbursements.
Evaluates payroll activity for conformity pay practice and policy including withholding regulations such as internal revenue service policies for withholding and reporting, as well as record keeping assessments.
Responsible for verifying that all quarterly and annual payments to the Internal Revenue Service and other state and local taxing authorities are paid timely and accurately and that all appropriate filings have been made with these authorities.
Works with internal and external auditors to provide accurate data as needed.
Responds to all Customers in a prompt, professional manner to resolve all role related questions and issues.
Develops periodic payroll and other ad hoc reports for utilization by the department to support the organization.
Maintain employee labor distribution set up and requests including the processing of historical retro allocations.
Keeps abreast of system upgrades and assist with special projects and testing.
Under the guidance of the Payroll Director, keeps updated of principles and regulation changes relevant to the payroll cycle and makes recommendations to any modifications or changes needed in organizational payroll policies and procedures.
Works harmoniously and effectively across departments.
Audits the payroll process of W2¡¦s and year end 941 reconciliations.
Responsible for the completion of monthly account analysis associated with payroll accounts, including system audits.
Lead continuous improvement efforts to the existing processes as well as helping to define and document standard work with an emphasis on cross training as they pertain to expense reimbursements and payroll accounting.
Ensure the accuracy of Fidelity 403B, 457B, and Roth payments are in agreement with the payroll withholdings.
Posting of Payroll Journal Entries and reconciliation of these accounts.
Lead multiple process improvement initiatives.
Other duties as assigned.

Required Job Qualifications:
Bachelor Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration and 4 years of experience in payroll accounting OR a cumulative of 8 years of experience in payroll and payroll accounting.
Knowledge of multi-state Payroll tax laws, rules, regulations, and compliance. Knowledge for tax implications for benefits and fringe benefits.
Knowledge of accounting theory, concepts, methods, and techniques for applying them to payroll accounting transactions.
¡P Comprehensive knowledge of fundamental tasks, such as paycheck calculations, taxation principles, preparing ledgers and journals, transfers, journal entries, and deposits.
PC proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
Experience dealing effectively with customers.
Accounting skills including knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Experience performing accounting, reconciliation, and internal controls, preferably in an academic medical center environment, with significant sponsored research activities
Detailed and accuracy oriented.
Good planning and organizational skills to balance and prioritize work.
Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines as well as be flexible and dependable.
Strong interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills.

Preferred Job Qualifications:
FPC or CPP certification.
