Responsibilities:
Collects blood from patient as directed by physician order using appropriate age-specific criteria. Follows established practices to ensure comfort of patient and protection of self. May be assigned to collect other types of specimens. May be required to perform function at alternate sites. May assist with processing of specimens.

Qualifications:
Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of phlebotomy course with at least 120 hours of clinical rotation in a medical arena or completion of phlebotomy course and appropriate experience of at least one year.

Minimum Experience: One year of recent phlebotomy experience preferred, new graduates will be considered with recommendation from instructor. Must demonstrate excellent phlebotomy skill and knowledge. Evening and night shift phlebotomists must have significant experience with all age groups.

Required Certification/Registration:
ASCP certification preferred.

Physical Demands: Walking and standing most of the day with numerous occasions that may require bending. Reaches for, lifts and carries light to moderately heavy supplies. Visual acuity and color discrimination is required. Ability to communicate effectively and to comprehend conversation. Must have manual dexterity and hand-to-eye coordination. Must anticipate unexpected movements by patients. Capable of working assigned hours at varied times during the day or night. Alertness required during all phases of work.

Working Conditions:
Subject to odors from specimens, patients and chemicals. Exposure to infectious materials when handling specimens. Contact with major equipment and computer systems. Contact with patients, department co-workers, nursing staff and occasionally physicians.
