Directly responsible for the planning and continuous improvement for site HVAC, Utility, and Energy systems; including but not limited to, air handling, dust collection, purified water, compressed air, nitrogen, chilled water, heating water, steam, city water and sewer and purchased utilities. Provide operational support, troubleshooting, and optimization for systems, directing and coordinating equipment maintenance and upgrades to improve reliability, and applying engineering principles to the design and implementation of new equipment.


Provides project support to external professional Engineering and other firms as part of the execution of equipment, facility or utility modification / upgrade, or expansion projects to ensure successful completion of project and / or Engineering objectives.


Responsibilities

  • Manage, implement, and monitor programs intended to increase the uptime of assets. Such programs include but are not limited to: Preventive/Predictive Maintenance Optimization, Reliability-Centered Maintenance, Condition-Based Maintenance, and Total Productive Maintenance programs.
  • Conduct analysis and investigations and provide leadership to others in Failure Mode and Effects Analysis & Root cause Analysis on equipment failures that significantly affect product quality, equipment uptime and plant capacity. Report conclusions to plant management and make recommendations for improved programs and practices intended to prevent similar failures.
  • Manages capital improvement projects, including defining requirements, estimating budgets, creating and managing project schedules, construction management, and commissioning/qualification. Also reports progress to stakeholders.
  • Leads the development of engineering standards (construction) and department procedures for maintenance and operation of site utility equipment. Keeps abreast of new technologies and procedures relative to plant utilities that could be utilized to improve the business of Engineering & Maintenance.
  • Partner with Engineering lead to support the design, specification, construction, startup and validation of HVAC, Utility, and Energy systems for upgrade and capital projects. Provide technical utility system information to design professionals, support quality control inspections, and aid in project turnover to the customer.
  • Direct mid-level complexity group projects – identify, propose, and champion creative and constructive solutions articulating the business value created. Monitor and communicate progress on all projects within the assigned portfolio to successfully deliver project scope, timeline, and budget objectives.
  • Research new technologies, procedures, and continuous improvement activities relative to HVAC, plant utilities, and energy supply that could be utilized to improve the business. Implement solutions aligned with site/department metrics and business objectives/strategy.
  • Contribute to functional forums at the site. Support site standards, processes and systems / tools to drive consistency, efficiency and quality for HVAC, utility, and energy systems.
  • Monitor HVAC & utility systems to maintain compliance with applicable codes and standards. Ensure site specifications, standards, and compliance expectations are met and that good engineering practices are followed relative to execution of projects, maintenance, or operation of responsible systems.
  • Contribute to the maintaining of a “state of control” over HVAC & utility systems by assuring compliance system management and maintenance of as-built drawings and system documentation.
  • Provide support in development of master planning for site infrastructure, HVAC, utility, and energy systems and support site master planning activities.
  • Provide technical support regarding repair of the HVAC, utility generation, utility distribution, and energy supply systems. Contribute to technical root cause analysis, incident investigations, and troubleshooting on equipment (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control system problems). Analyse problems, develop and propose engineering solutions using data-driven techniques and analyses.
  • Support site initiatives on energy management, including development of energy savings programs, communication, projects, and measurements. Propose and support tools to drive a life cycle focus on investments and projects. Keep abreast of new regulations, technologies, and best practices to ensure continuous improvement in sustainability.
  • Regular and predictable onsite attendance and punctuality and intermittent 24x7 on-call duties.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
    • In lieu of bachelor’s degree, and additional 4 years’ experience (to below requirements) specifically in the design/operations of related systems in the pharmaceutical, chemical, or food industries
  • 2+ years of experience in areas of Engineering design or operation
  • General demonstratable knowledge of the design and/or operation of HVAC and/or Utility systems including equipment specification, design, and operation of systems. Examples duct design, room pressure control, filtration systems, psychometrics, industrial ventilation, chilled water, heating water, steam, purified water, and compressed gases.
  • Basic understanding of the pharmaceutical, chemical, or food industries with general understanding of related regulatory topics and equipment commissioning.
