A busy behavioral health practice is seeking a part-time Play Therapist for after school and Sunday hours. The Play Therapist will work to help children and young adolescents to gain insight and understanding of their experiences, increasing emotional resilience, and developing coping strategies while decreasing problematic behaviors and internalized conflicts. This position requires working on-site.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with children and young adolescents suffering from a range of psychological difficulties and complex life experiences such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, experiences of abuse, grief, family breakdown, domestic violence, and trauma.
  • Assess needs and run play therapy sessions using toys and creative arts such as drawing, clay, sand, movement, music, and therapeutic story telling.
  • Develop symbolic communication with children, making a connection between the signs, symbols, and actions they create in play and how these reflect their experiences.
  • Nurture an in-depth therapeutic relationship, which promotes positive change in the child by helping them to help themselves.
  • Work closely with the child’s parents, care givers, teachers, school nurses and other professionals throughout the Play Therapy intervention.
  • Undertake parent-child relationship interventions when needed.
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team of pediatricians, psychiatrists, social workers, occupational therapists, and other specialists.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • LMSW/LCSW
  • Play therapy experience or training
  • Good understanding of child development
  • Having a patient, calm, and friendly manner to make children feel secure
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Sensitivity, understanding and a non-judgmental outlook
  • Ability to interpret a range of emotions and behaviors
  • Ability to adapt to change and cope with stressful situations
  • Good physical fitness so you can work with children on the floor or do physical activities
  • After school and Sunday availability
  • Fluency in Yiddish or Spanish a plus
