Job SummaryProvide essential services to foster a safe community through crime reduction and deterrence including enforcement of laws, protection of life and property, preservation of peace, apprehension of criminals and investigation of traffic accidents. Routine course of action to be followed is generally clear-cut and specific in accordance with established Police Department policies; however, ability to make independent decisions and act quickly in emergencies is required. Requires contact with public in situations that require the use of tact, diplomacy and good judgment. Maintain a good attitude.
Must have passed Texas Commission of Law Enforcement (TCOLE) exam.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
Duty will be assigned according to needs of the Department upon successful completion of Field Training Program.
Patrol a designated area by car, motorcycle or on foot to deter crime, detect violations of the law, and respond to radio dispatched calls.
Enforce moving traffic and related ordinances, apprehend violators, issue citations and make arrests.
Make preliminary investigations to assist in solving crimes against persons and property; gather information, follow up on leads, uncover evidence and gather information and interrogate witnesses; may maintain surveillance of suspects and perform other basic duties to assist Investigators.
Make investigations of traffic accidents; assume charge at traffic sites, secure emergency medical aid for injured persons, may administer first aid, direct traffic, and see that site is cleared and safe for traffic.
Prepare and submit written reports of patrol activities, investigative activities and traffic investigations.
Notify command staff promptly of need for supervisory intervention and/or major and high-profile incidents.
Communicate effectively via police radio, telephone, and in person, with co-workers and all others, including persons of diverse backgrounds and in altered emotional and psychological states.
Testify completely and accurately in administrative, civil and criminal proceedings.
Take enforcement action as a peace officer when appropriate, including firearms qualification and use, and meet all other physical requirements of a police officer.
Make moral and ethical decisions that conform to law and other applicable regulations.
Exercise proper judgment when dealing with emergency situations.
Communicate courteously with the general public and answer questions that may arise about services provided.
Convey a positive professional image by action, communication and appearance.
Regular, reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the job.
Contribute to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.

Experience
Prior law enforcement experience preferred.
Training
Meet all Texas Commission of Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements, including personal continuing education requirements.
Maintain firearms qualification and use.
Knowledge of
Comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.
Police techniques and departmental rules, regulations, and procedures pertaining to interrogation and interview.
Laws of arrest, search and seizure, and criminal and juvenile law.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
WORKING CONDITIONS
Subject to hazards and potential physical dangers inherent in law enforcement work. Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens.
Required to make arrests or to defend self against assault occasionally; requires considerable physical strength and agility.
May work at desk or assigned area in squad car or motorcycle, or other conveyance.
May sit for long periods in squad car or stand for long periods directing traffic or performing other police work.
May work varying schedules, including nights, weekends and holidays, as required.
Work occasionally requires travel, including over-night stays, involving training and conducting City business.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Maintain an acceptable physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include but not limited to running, walking, crouching or crawling during emergency operations.
Effectively deal with personal danger which may include dangerous people, animals, and hazards both natural and man-made.
Maintain an acceptable level of visual and hearing acuity.
Must not pose a threat to the health or safety of others.
Load and unload Police equipment from a vehicle, including lifting object of 50 pounds. Bend or stoop to retrieve materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Able to climb stairs/ladders. Able to walk, stand or sit for extended periods of time.
Must possess the physical strength and stamina to engage in a physical confrontation or combat.
Able to perform life-saving and rescue operations.
Must possess the ability to inspect remote sites which may require climbing and traversing rough terrain in all weather conditions.
Must participate and pass requirements of the Department"s Wellness Program.
Education, Certifications and/or Licenses
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES
~ Police Officer certificate issued by Texas Commission of Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
~ High school diploma /GED required supplemented by additional specialized training in law enforcement.
~ Maintain a valid Texas driver"s license without restriction other than "A", and maintain a safe driving record as define by city policy.
~ Maintain a current first aid/cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
~ Proof of citizenship and/or eligibility to legally work in the United States.
~ Maintain required FEMA Courses.

Hiring Salary starting at $27.56 ($57,339) straight out of police academy and up based on TCOLE certification level and type of experience. This is not a police recruit or police cadet position. You must be a Texas Peace Officer or in a Texas police academy with a nearing graduation date. Full Salary Range is $57,339 - $84,474.
Lateral transfer offers are made at the discretion of the Chief of Police.
We work six 12-hr shifts and one 8-hr flex day per two week pay period for a total of 80 hours. Overtime is paid for hours worked over 80 hours in the two week pay period.
Shifts rotate from Days (6 am-6 pm) to Nights (6 pm-6 am) every four months.
TCOLE certification pay:
Intermediate Officer $50 month ($600.00 Annually)
Advance Officer $100 month ($1,200.00 Annually)
Master Officer $150 month ($1,800.00 Annually)

Retirement
The City is a member of the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS). Employees contribute 7% of their gross wages on a pre-tax basis to TMRS. The City matches 2:1. You are vested after five years of employment. Vested employees will receive their own and the City"s matching contributions, plus interest upon retirement via monthly payment options. You are eligible to retire once vested and age 60 or 20 years of service at any age. While working you also have a supplemental death benefit equal to 1 times your yearly salary.
Holiday
The City recognizes 13 Holidays per calendar year. New Year"s Day, MLK Day, President"s Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran"s Day, Thanksgiving and the Day after, Christmas Eve and Christmas. Effective immediately.
Sick Time
8 hours per month with a maximum of 480 hours. May be taken at the first of the month following one month of employment.
Vacation
8 hours per month for the first five years. Accrual rate increases after 5 years and 10 years. May be taken at the first of the month following one month of employment.
Personal Time
16 hours per calendar year. May be taken at the first of the month following one month of employment.

Long Term Disability
The City pays for long term disability which covers 50% of monthly pre-disability pay. The maximum monthly benefit is $5,000.
Life Insurance and AD&D
$10,000 guarantee issue provided by the City. Supplemental life insurance and dependent life insurance is available.
Longevity Pay
All full-time employees will receive $48 of longevity pay per year after the first year of employment with the City, with an increase of $48 per year thereafter.

Deferred Compensation

Pay Cycle
For pay purposes the work week begins at 12:01 am on Sunday and ends at midnight on Saturday. Employees are paid bi-weekly on Friday. If payday falls on a holiday, payday will be on the day preceding the holiday.

Applicants must hold a Basic TCOLE license or be enrolled in a TCOLE Police Academy with a nearing graduation date. We do not send applicants to a police academy to become licensed.
The hiring selection process will be as follows:
1. (Steps A-B will be completed in one day)
A. Physical Fitness Test The Lakeway Police Department conducts a row test utilizing the Concept2 rower, set at a resistance level of 5. The applicant will choose one of the following three Physical Readiness Tests:
2000-meter row: percentage is calculated using age, gender and weight.
4-minute row: number of meters to row is calculated using age, gender and weight.
500-meter row: Males must complete in 1 minute and 58 seconds. Females must complete in 2 minutes and 17 seconds.
The applicant must complete the test with a score of 60% or higher to move forward in the hiring process. Please come in or bring a change of workout clothes and shoes. Also please bring your driver license.
B. Written Exam. Conducted on the same day as the fitness testing.
Applicants who progress beyond the physical fitness phase will be asked to complete a written exam. The test is a Police Officer Selection Test (POST by Standard & Assoc.) which tests for general aptitude in the areas of arithmetic, reading comprehension, grammar and incident report writing. It is not a civil service exam. It will take approximately 2 hours to complete. It is broken down into 4 timed parts. You must score an overall average of 75% to pass. Exam results will be given to the applicant immediately following the exam. All applicants that pass will be scheduled for the Oral Board.
2. Oral Board. This is the formal interview.
3. Applicants who pass the oral board will be considered for a conditional offer of employment at the discretion of the Chief of Police. Conditional items to be met: personal history statement/background investigation, executive interview, medical physical, drug analysis, psychological evaluation, and firearms qualification.
4. Once all conditional items have been met a start date will be determined and a final offer letter for employment will be made.
All applicants that are hired will be required to successfully complete our field training program before assignment to solo patrol. This is normally takes about six months.
