ABOUT THE ACADEMY
The American Academy of Actuaries (Academy) is a D.C.-based 19,500+ member professional association whose mission is to serve the public and the U.S. actuarial profession. OVERVIEW
Provides staff support for the Risk Management & Financial Reporting Practice Council. Monitors relevant legislation and regulations of importance to Academy members and the actuarial profession and provides updates as appropriate to Council and Committees. Assists volunteers in the development of public policy workstreams, pertaining to such issues as climate change, cyber risk, and big data, financial services reforms, and others across range of issues. Exercises independent judgment in managing ongoing projects and initiatives within the practice council. Assists the practice council vice president in the development of budgets and monitors budget compliance. Assists director of public policy and vice president and committee chairs in strategic planning. Develops command of subject matter under the jurisdiction of the Council in order to represent it and leverage its work before stakeholders. Provides guidance to other department staff and suggests initiatives to improve the effectiveness of the Academy’s policy efforts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists members of the practice council and its committees, work groups and task forces development and analysis of policy workstreams (comment letters, issue briefs, monographs and others).
  • Provides primary staff support for the Risk Management & Financial Reporting Practice Council and related committees, work groups and task forces, including drafting meeting minutes, maintaining records, developing agendas, tracking projects and coordinating volunteers’ efforts..
  • Monitors and analyzes relevant legislation and regulations of importance to the Academy’s members and the actuarial profession.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with public policy decision-makers to increase awareness of the Academy’s role as a source of independent, objective analysis and actuarial expertise.
  • Works to increase recognition of the actuarial profession’s value with policy-makers and suggests initiatives to increase the effectiveness of the Academy’s policy efforts.
  • Strategizes with policy management team on distribution of Council work products to amplify the public policy impact.
  • Works with public policy management team, other Academy staff and practice council vice president to develop and oversee operating budget.
  • Provides support for the Academy’s communications efforts; drafts articles on public policy issues for Academy and other relevant publications.
  • Provides support for the Academy’s external relations and membership efforts; assists in the distribution of Academy materials at meetings and conferences.
  • Provides guidance to assist other staff in understanding procedures and operations of the Academy and the public policy department.
  • Makes recommendations to the director of public policy regarding department policies, operations and resource needs.
  • Works with director of public policy, deputy director, assistant director to coordinate the activities under the purview of the Practice Council.
  • Other duties as necessary.

  • Develop thorough understanding of subject matter and Academy structure and operations.
  • Ability to multitask on a number of projects at once.
  • Initiative, creativity and self-motivation.
  • Effective time management, project management and strong organizational skills.
Education and experience required:
  • College degree and three years of association, regulatory/legislative or related public policy experience.
