Position Summary
Pool Monitors monitor activities and ensure the safety of swimmers at aquatic facilities, responding to emergency situations
Seasonal Pool Monitors are only employed to work during the Summer Season.
Education, Training and Experience – minimum required to proficiently perform the job
Education / higher education: High School diploma or GED
Education and/or experience preferences: Prefer prior experience as a Lifeguard
Certifications, Licenses and Registrations
Driver’s License requirement: None Required Endorsements: none
Required certifications, licenses or registrations: CPR, AED and First Aid
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job
Knowledge: Lifeguarding and lifesaving techniques and procedures.
Skills: To identify hazards, unsafe behaviors, and swimmers in distress and properly address each situation, preserving life and safety. Must have excellent public relations and customer service skills.
Authorities and Accountabilities
Level of independent decision making: Minimal-incumbent primarily carries-out instructions and follows established procedures
Span of control: Responsibility for own work (no supervision or leadership expectations)
Essential Functions

- Performs lifeguarding and instructional duties, warning swimmers of improper activities and hazards. Responds to emergencies, rescuing persons in distress or in danger of drowning; provides rescue breathing, CPR, AED or First Aid.
- Follows and enforces rules and regulations.
- Notifies management of accidents, rescues or problems.
- Maintains up-to-date rescue knowledge, skills, abilities and procedures in the aquatic industry.
- Responds to questions asked by pool users.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Daily activity level: Blend of sedentary and physical work
Physical characteristics: While performing the essential functions of this job, some tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of sitting, standing, walking and/or swimming. Emergency tasks and training involve the performance of physically demanding work, which may involve some combination of running, climbing or swimming, and may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy and/or heavy objects, materials and/or persons. Frequently required to sit, kneel, stand, stop, communicate, reach and manipulate swimmers; walk or rove around the pool. Job requires oral and aural communication; Job requires reading and comprehension of written materials; Job requires normal vision; Must be able to distinguish colors; Must be able to see in dim light; Grasping with hand, gripping; Use of medical equipment (i.e. AED, give injections, bandage/splint); Lifting/carrying/push/pull up to 49 lbs.; Working while standing for prolonged periods of time; Running while carrying materials/equipment/gear/tools; Swimming/ lifeguarding activities; Working more than 8 hours/day. Requires frequent use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling and depth perception to help with the recognition and identification of swimmers in distress or unsafe behaviors.
Exposures: Exposure to biological agents, human/animal body fluids, blood pathogen, excrement or tuberculosis; Working outside in inclement weather conditions.
Extraordinary working conditions: May work in an outside environment that is subject to quick changes in environment, including rain, thunder/lightening, and hail. Bare feet; slippery surfaces; possible exposures to blood-borne pathogens
Hazardous equipment/machinery used: Ladders; diving boards
