Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment (ISSE) invites applications for one full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate position to collaborate with our team to study social-technological integration on building energy efficiency, energy justice and environmental health. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct technical assistance and research related to improved energy and environmental justice research community engagement and industrial facilities during their operational phase and will work with the Energy Efficiency Research and Analysis (EERA) Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the U.S. DOE’s Better Buildings, Better Plant program. The candidate will also have an opportunity to develop technical assistance for regional manufacturers in the field of smart manufacturing and Internet of Things.

The position is available to start by August 1, 2023. The Postdoctoral researcher will report to Dr. Chien-fei Chen, the Director of Energy and Environmental Justice. This is a twelve-month appointment, renewable annually for up to two years based on performance and funds availability. The compensation package includes a competitive salary, health benefits, career mentoring, and any required travel.


Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in architecture, civil, environmental or industrial engineering, geography, energy policy or related discipline with experience with occupant behaviors, building efficiency, renewable energy adoption, specifically with the understanding of social justice or energy justice is required prior to appointment.
  • A strong publication record is desired.
  • Programming experience is preferable.
  • Familiarity with numerical calculation and advanced statistical data analysis techniques is desired.
  • Knowledge of occupant behaviors, environmental health, social-technological integration, weatherization, energy policy, public housing energy issues and community engagement is desired.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with manufacturing partners, sponsors, and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles are required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building, partnering and communications are a plus for this position.
