Position Description:
The University of Iowa, College of Dentistry has an opening for a post-doctoral research scholar in Dr. Zhang’s laboratory in the Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research. Our group seeks to delineate the role of innate and adaptive immunity involved in the pathogenesis of periodontal and peri-implant diseases through animal models. I We also explore the underlying mechanism of the pathology of periodontal disease under the impact of systemic conditions such as diabetes by in vivo animal models. In collaboration with other researchers, we also perform therapeutic studies through a locally delivered approach to evaluate the effectiveness of bio-engineered novel small molecules in treating periodontitis.
Education Requirement:
- By time of appointment, PhD in Oral Biology or Biomedical Science;
Required Qualifications:
- expertise in pathogenesis of periodontal disease and diabetes;
- experience creating diabetes animal models;
- experience in explant culturing;
- proficiency in histology (immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry staining), and cell signaling (Western blotting);
- ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary group; and
- excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications:
- DDS/DMD or equivalent;
- Certificate in Periodontology or Oral Medicine training;
- Experience creating periodontitis models;
- first-authored publications; and
- experience/knowledge of bone biology, animal colony maintenance/expansion, small animal (i.e. mouse) surgical skills, and using microtome for histology sectioning.
