PRINCIPAL METALLURGIST – R&D

POSITION SUMMARY – The R&D Principal Metallurgist at Carpenter Technology provides a diversified range of technical services to or internal and external customer supporting the attainment of Company and Division goals.
PRIMARY DUTIES for the Metallurgist Staff Specialist
  • The successful candidate is responsible for making disposition of referred, non-conforming and off-standard material, including but not limited to RMR’s and customer claims.
  • Responsible for training and education to key customers. Provides leadership to less-experienced staff. Provides support, leadership and guidance to peers, customers and manager in key projects and opportunities.
  • Leads others in the use of statistical methods and experimental design. Managers functional project teams to address and solve complex technical problems and recognize business trends for alloy and process development, including project planning and budget compliance.
  • Recognizes and communicates technical risk to management. Applies SPC, Six-Sigma and/or BPI Tools to detect project inefficiencies.
  • This position will interact with operations, technical, R&D, purchasing, and quality personnel as well as providing technical support during customer audits.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
REQUIRED FOR THE Metallurgist – Staff Specialist
  • Four year college degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science or related field required, advanced degree preferred for R&D.
  • 8+ years of experience, combined with consistently strong performance.
  • Advanced knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of metallurgical and production equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of newest and lastest technologies available.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office - including Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Experience applying SPC, Six Sigma and BPI tools in the search for the elimination of manufacturing process inefficiencies.
  • Experience initiating programs and projects, driving results on schedule and anticipating and mitigating risks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to organize and prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions. Goal driven and self-directed.
  • Ability to access mill and manufacturing areas.
PREFERRED FOR THE Metallurgist - Staff Specialist
  • Ability to identify and predict future needs for alloy development and identify potential new products, processes and partners as well as champion innovative new ideas.
  • Ability to make significant individual contribution to attainment of team objectives.
  • Collaboration - work with management to develop and implement strategic plans or the company. Provide support, leadership and guidance to peers, customers and manager in key projects and opportunities. Proactively and independently mentor others.
  • Customer Focus - provide training and education to key customers. Anticipate and respond in a timely manner to internal and external customer needs and be an expert resource who is sought out for input.
