Job Summary:
Prepares various broadgoods, tape, cordage, rubber and yarns to customer specifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Reads, interprets and works to written instructions such as standard task procedures, work orders, work order instructions, supplementary instructions, manufacturer's and customer's specifications, Material Safety Data Sheets, safety rules. Must be able to understand and follow verbal instructions.
  • Processes glass yarns involving operations such as skeining, pump leaching, washing, draining, coating and drying of yarns, and leaching various weights and weaves of cloths.
  • Processes glass fiber cloth and fibers, involving such processing as caramelizing, continuous leaching, re-rolling, lift and drain leaching, washing and drying and firing.
  • Operates and controls support equipment associated with the leach lines such as the tank farms, acid recovery and neutralization, and filter press (waste) management.
  • Processes rayon fabric involving skeining, pre-carbonization, continuous firing, acid dipping, washing, and grading.
  • High temperature oven treating of yarns, fibers and cloths.
  • Processes carbonaceous materials involving low temperature tank carbonizing, re-rolling for graphite firing, and batch oven final firing of carbon and graphite cloths, yarns, webs, and chopped fibers.
  • Starts-up and closes-down all equipment, threads-up and monitors equipment feeding and take-off operations.
  • Moves material between warehouse and factory and between operations.
  • Prepares various production and quality reports, and maintains logs.
  • Prepares samples for quality and performs other quality inspections such as measuring for thickness, length and weight. Visually inspects material for defects and non-conformities.
  • Performs minor maintenance and reports malfunctioning of equipment.
  • Operates single and battery textile skeining and spooling machines. Selecting and mounting rewind skein stand or cores, bobbin, or spool, mounts winding stack, thread machine, adjusts tension, and winds to proper size and weight. Splices, cuts off and ties as required.
  • Visually inspects, grades, packs, weighs, labels and stores finished products.
  • Actively and effectively participates in work and problem solving teams. Identifying goals and process improvement opportunities.
Skills:
  • Ability to read and interpret written documents such as standard task procedures, work orders, work order instructions, supplementary instructions, manufacturer's and customer's specifications, Material Safety Data Sheets, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Must be able to understand and follow verbal instructions. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, vendors, and/ or employees of organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Understanding and use of group decision-making techniques, and problem solving meeting techniques. Ability to function in a team environment.
Education and/or Experience:
  • High school graduate or GED plus one year related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Materials, Tools, and Equipment

  • Materials: Glass fiber, rayon, silica, sleevings, cordages, tapes, rovings, splicing cements, cardboard boxes, spools, cores, packaging tapes, bags, carbon and graphite, cloths, yarns, and chopped fiber. Process chemicals including hydrochloric acids, lime slurry, neutralizing agents, steam, water, coating materials, waxes, oxalic acid, ammonium dichromate, and Teflon.
  • Tools: Mechanics hand tools, measuring equipment, light hand tools such as hammers, pipe wrenches, hacksaw, wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, snips, scissors, needles, knives, yardage meters, tachometer and graduated flasks, rules, marking pens.
  • Equipment: Leaching, scouring, drying and heat treat process equipment, control and recording instruments, furnaces, tanks, and continuous process leacher. Pumps including water, lime, vacuum and acid pumps. Extractors, steam exchanges and cans, scrubbers, winding and skeining machines, nitrogen cooling valves, flow meters, temperature and processing gages and meters, weighting scales, overhead crane, hoists and swings, lift trucks, tow motors, handling stands, rolls, take-ups. Textile skeining, winding, and spooling machines. Acid tank farm equipment, acid recovery and neutralization equipment, and filter press (waste management) equipment.
