Location: 2200 North 33rd Street in Lincoln, Nebraska
As part of the Research, Analysis and Inventory Section of the Wildlife Division, this position provides leadership and strategic direction for the Nebraska Natural Heritage Program (NHP), whose mission is to develop, manage, and distribute scientific information critical to the conservation of the state’s at-risk species and biological diversity.
This position delivers innovative leadership and expertise to ensure the protection of the state's natural heritage, which includes providing sound science to federal, state, and local agencies, natural resource professionals, and to the public to support informed conservation, land management, and land use decisions. The NHP Manager provides oversight of the work and products of the program, ensuring application of best available science and scientific rigor.
The position is responsible for outreach efforts to NGPC staff and other agencies and organizations on conservation-related issues and topics, including making sure that the program's database and expertise are available and usable by others. The NHP Manager serves as the co-coordinator of the State Wildlife Action Plan as a lead on the Science Team and At-risk Species Teams. The NHP Manager also collaborates with other Natural Heritage programs and with NatureServe. This position is responsible for supervising NHP staff and for the development and management of the program's budget.
REQUIREMENTS: Post high school coursework/training with major coursework in fish or wildlife management or a closely related field of biological science plus four years’ experience in fish or wildlife resource management; or master's degree plus two years’ experience; or Ph.D. plus one year of experience. At least two years of the experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.
OTHER: Driver's license is required.
Thorough understanding of current biodiversity conservation principles, issues and solutions. Sound knowledge of the flora, fauna, and ecosystems of Nebraska. Administrative, managerial, and supervisory experience, including project management.
Ability to secure funds from a variety of sources and administer grants. Strong interpersonal, writing, and speaking skills with the ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences. Ability to set goals and meet deadlines and experience in coordinating multiple, complex, and detailed projects.
Ability to interact with representatives of state and federal agencies, conservation organizations, and academic institutions. Experience with a variety of computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and GIS.
