Organization Description:
The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service overseeing the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Fort Point National Historic Site, and Muir Woods National Monument — 82,000 acres of national parkland spanning the San Francisco Bay Area, including Muir Woods, Ocean Beach, Crissy Field, and Alcatraz Island. The Parks Conservancy is a membership organization created to preserve the Golden Gate National Parks, enhance the experiences of park visitors, and build a community dedicated to conserving the parks for the future. The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is also a member of the One Tam collaborative, supporting NPS, Marin Water, Marin County Parks, and CA State Parks in work on the mountain.

Department Description:
The Projects & Design Department supports park preservation and enhancement efforts of our local and federal partners. We strive for our projects to be grounded in community design, and we are working towards engaging more a diverse cross-section of Bay Area residents in project planning.
The staff within the department provide planning, project management, and project implementation expertise across a rich suite of projects. We are excited to bring our current projects to completion, including projects at Crissy Field, Bothin Marsh, and Marin Forest Health work that have an increased focus on climate resilience and community design.
Position Overview:
The Park Projects & Design Department’s Project Manager will work with interdisciplinary project teams to ensure thoughtful and innovative planning, design, and implementation of park projects. The duties vary and require a flexible individual that can manage several projects at a time. In addition to collaborating with Parks Conservancy staff, the role works closely with design consultants, contractors, and public agency staff. The ideal candidate has a background in site planning and design, and is interested in working in a biologically and culturally rich park environment, in service to visitor experience, public access, and inclusivity. Typical park projects are based within the built environment and/or environmentally sensitive landscapes and involve trails and visitor amenities, habitat restoration, resource preservation, and climate change resiliency planning.
This is a full time (40 hours/week) exempt, benefited position.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Project Management (approximately 90%)
- Manage all phases of projects, including project initiation, design, and construction of park improvements and planning efforts, in close coordination with agency partners when applicable. Project management tasks vary widely depending on project goals and focus. Typical tasks may include:
- For project initiation: Collaborate with public agency partners and stakeholders to define project scope, goals, and objectives. Research and assemble plans, surveys, studies, and other background documents. Draft consultant scopes and hire as needed. Develop and communicate team roles and responsibilities.
- For community engagement: Lead, support, or coordinate community design and engagement throughout project, in close collaboration with other Parks Conservancy teams such as Community Engagement and Stewardship and Youth Programs. May include creating community engagement strategies, collecting data needed to make decisions, making graphics and communications materials as needed, and encouraging civic engagement opportunities. Present at engagement events and meetings. Make sure community’s voice is translated into project goals and process.
- For design: Develop and manage timelines and budgets for all phases of design. Hire and oversee design consultants. Provide technical assistance to park staff and consultants including development of construction details and research into appropriate materials/methods/products.
- For compliance: Research compliance pathways. Lead approvals and permits or support public agencies, as needed.
- For construction: Manage construction strategy, including bidding and contractor selection. During construction, ensure timely responses to submittals and requests for information and negotiate change orders. Provide construction observation and quality control to assure work meets requirements of contract documents. Review completed work and approve payments. Lead monitoring and reporting.
- For project closeout: Ensure smooth transition of completed projects to park agency management and work with Parks Conservancy and partners to set up stewardship plan.
- QA/QC: Provide direction, make decisions, and guide project team. Review all work to ensure best practices and project goals are met.
- Other tasks as needed to achieve goals of organization and team.
- Manage projects so they are delivered on schedule and on budget, and make decisions (with Director) about project risk and priorities. Track project progress and deliverables, organize meetings, create agendas and be responsible for follow up.
- Work with partners-public agencies, community stakeholders, other Parks Conservancy teams, and funders—to advance project goals and tasks.
- Assist the Development team and Director to develop funding strategy for projects. Work with Development team to develop grant applications, as needed.
- Develop a strategy for project graphics and communication.
- Create a positive and productive project team dynamic. Lead project teams and foster collaboration across a wide range of partners, departments, consultants, and contractors. Facilitate meetings and present project updates to staff and leadership.
Park Projects and Design Advancement (approximately 10%)
- Work to build philanthropic support for park projects and initiatives.
- Help build and manage partnerships with community groups and partner agencies.
- Help scope new project opportunities.
- May be involved with hiring, supervising, and mentoring junior staff on the Projects & Design Team.
- Help advance social justice and climate resilience focus within the Park Projects and Design team.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Facilitation and leadership: Ability to coordinate and facilitate meetings and project teams. Collaborates with others to solve problems. Takes initiative and follows up to keep projects moving forward. Listens and responds thoughtfully to complex needs and situations. Acts tactfully and treats others with respect.
- Communication: Communicates clearly and effectively via email/writing, phone, and in person. Comfortable giving presentations and speaking in front of groups.
- Familiarity with federal and state compliance process preferred, but not required.
- Ability to read and review site, engineering, and architectural plans, details, and specifications. Ability to communicate ideas through diagrams, sketches, maps, or other graphic presentation. Comfortable with design and mapping programs, such as AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, GIS, and 3D modeling.
Education and Experience:
- 5 to 10 years relevant experience in environmental design or a related field (landscape architecture or site design preferred).
- At least 3 years in a project manager role. Can independently manage a wide array of projects simultaneously. Ability to manage consultants and contractors.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Valid California Driver’s License and clear driving record; must be insurable to drive company vehicles.
- Work is performed primarily in an office environment (including a mix of telework and on-site); regularly sits at a computer workstation and operates electronic equipment 6-8 hours per day.
- Regularly visits to project sites, which may include walking on trails or other uneven terrain.
- Office location is Fort Mason, San Francisco.
- This position requires at least one day per week onsite, and may be adjusted in the future to meet the essential requirements of the position.
- This position requires working “off hours,” for example weekend and evening meetings and events and early construction meeting starts.
Pay Grade/Salary/Benefits:
- Pay grade 18
- Salary $95,000/year
