This position will be located in Forest Park, GA (Metro-Atlanta area)

WORK LOCATION

  • This position will be based out of Forest Park, GA, however candidates living outside the area may be considered with the expectation that they could successfully telework and would be willing to commute into the office on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis.
  • This position will require a mix of both remote and office work.
  • Some office work may be performed remotely (telework/work from home).

JOB SUMMARY

This position will provide daily technical leadership and guidance to the Protection & Control Applications (PCA) group and frequently to personnel in Design, Operations and Field Services roles. This position will serve as a point-of-contact for PCA’s involvement in Operating Company major initiatives, including project scoping and assisting with PCA resource scheduling. Additional responsibilities include providing Quality Assurance reviews for protective relaying applications and settings, completing special projects, and working with vendors to identify and implement protective equipment products to serve Southern Company's needs.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

  • Serve as a PCA representative for major project initiatives, assisting with scoping and resource scheduling
  • Perform Quality Assurance reviews for protective relaying applications and settings
  • Provide guidance for major or complex projects
  • Support and participate in the development of Southern Company Protection & Control (P&C) design standards and criteria
  • Serve as a technical resource to the Control Design and Field Services organizations for design consistency and problem resolution
  • Serve as a resource and instructor in the Southern Company Transmission training program
  • Provide formal and informal training to develop PCA employee technical expertise
  • Serve on SES and Industry committees, providing leadership and ensuring that best practices are applied at Southern Company

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • B.S. or higher in Electrical Engineering is required
  • Degree with Power System emphasis is highly preferred
  • Professional Engineer License is highly preferred
  • Extensive experience in the application of protective relaying and design of electrical control systems

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proven ability in applying safe work practices
  • Able to estimate and monitor PCA scheduling needs for projects
  • Proficient in design and operation of electromechanical and microprocessor P&C schemes
  • Proficient in protective relaying applications, calculations, and related studies
  • Knowledge of Protection & Control Applications processes and procedures
  • Knowledge of Electric System Operating Procedures
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Presentation skills to effectively communicate technical knowledge to others
  • Extensive problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of NERC and SERC compliance standards
