Position Summary:

Responsible for providing comprehensive nursing services directly to clients in a public health program.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide health related information to patients and administer immunizations to clients from infancy to senior Administer TB (tuberculosis) screening and referrals with follow up as needed.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public about immunizations and communicable

  • Educate patients, healthcare providers and community organizations about communicable diseases, immunizations and general Serves as an advocate for immunizations.
  • Performs clinical administration duties: Checks patients into clinic using electronic medical record. Prepares charts, gathers and maintains records. Performs general office duties such as: answering phones, filing, data entry, verification of client eligibility. Reviews and maintains accurate patient records using appropriate medical terminology.
  • Counsels patients in basic disease information; refers patients to resources and links to care. Assists patients by providing information and direction relative to special treatment procedures or health care problems or as instructed by providers or required by state statute.
  • Performs program outreach and field work as needed. Participates in various health fairs and other public health outreach events. Builds relationships with school nurses and community partners.
  • Maintain inventory of vaccines.
Minimum Education & Work Experience : •High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) •Medical Assistant Certification in State of Texas •2 years’ experience Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills:

Education/ Experience:

  • 2-4 years nursing experience
  • Bilingual preferred (English and Spanish or English and Vietnamese)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of all immunization requirements in the State of Texas
  • Knowledge of communicable
  • Knowledge of universal precautions and blood borne pathogens
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and protocols
  • Ability to learn immunization schedules
  • Ability to understand the storage and handling of all vaccines used within the health department
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally orally and in writing
  • Ability to understand and explain lab testing results
Licenses & Certifications: •Medical Assistant Certification in State of Texas •Valid Class C Texas driver's license Physical Tasks & Working Conditions: The incumbent works in a typical office/clinic environment with exposure to patient illness and may be subjected to occasional travel to various job sites and health care facilities. May require sitting, standing, lifting, walking, bending, stooping, and kneeling during examination of patients. Routinely works with medical sharps requiring universal precautions to avoid contact with pathogens. May be exposed to biohazards and infections carried by humans and bodily fluids.
