Atlas Roofing Shingle & Underlayment Division is seeking aQuality Control Lab Technicianfor Meridian, MS.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides technical support for Roof and Wall Insulation (RWI) and WEBTECH coating formulations.
  • Supports the raw material vendor research and development for Atlas Roofing Corporation technical projects for RWI and WEBTECH divisions.
  • Provides dotted line assistance of quality control personnel at the RWI and WEBTECH plants primarily in directing SQC functions and trial protocol to provide data in support of R&D.
  • Provides technical assistance to Sales and Marketing in support of products, code bodies, or test service centers.
  • Assists the Director of Quality and Process Quality Control Manager in maintaining up-to-date finished product manufacturing specifications, and raw material purchasing acceptance specifications including facers, along with quality control product test procedures.
  • Works with process, quality control, production, environmental, maintenance personnel to support plant conversion to new technology.
  • Represents R&D and manufacturing at third party testing of finished products.
  • Assists in chemistry and process education at the plants.
  • Access to significant corporate and division financial information, especially cost information.
  • Access and knowledge of all specifications and product formulations and designs.
  • Knowledge of all trial and research and development projects and intimate knowledge of all process technology and design.
  • Maintains and reports operational summaries on a regular basis to track performance versus planned objectives and maintains history for management information and comparative purposes.
  • Responsible for use of personal computer equipment, office hardware, and certain lab equipment.
  • Has significant contact with suppliers and vendors outside the corporation and with the purchasing departments.
  • Works with Director of R&D, Product Technology Manager, Director of Quality, Quality Control Managers, Plant Managers, and Process/Quality Control Manager to discuss process development and issues.
  • Knows product and raw material test methods.
  • Knows the necessary product physical property requirements so product specifications can be developed and implemented at the plant level.
  • Knows analytical chemistry.
  • Makes logical decisions concerning the analysis of data to propose changes in the operation of the process or changes to product formulations.
  • Able to train, direct and influence the actions of others.
  • Coordinates efforts of vendor R&D efforts.
  • Evaluates data and samples to determine the representation of the products Atlas produces.
  • Responsible for recommending formulation or process changes that can have significant cost impact from either poor manufacturing efficiency, quality complaint costs, or raw material costs.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% or more sometimes required. Must be flexible some projects may require time from home for extended periods.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Although the position has no direct reports, the position will supervise some work performed by Laboratory Technicians (1-4) that work in the Tech Center that conduct various raw material and product physical property descriptive tests.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Four-year degree required, with chemistry, polymer chemistry, biochemistry, biology, engineering or other science.
  • Three year's industry experience in the polyiso foam or coating industry or related chemistry and formulating experience is desired.
