Reference Data Developer
Whippany, NJ

As a Barclays Reference Data Developer, you will be involved in all aspects of software delivery including analysis, requirements gathering, design, development, testing and handover to the production support team. Development work will incorporate a range of languages and technologies, with a particular focus on ETL technologies like Perl, Java and relational databases on Windows and Linux platforms. The role also requires providing level 3 support to the application support teams.

Barclays is one of the world's largest and most respected financial institutions, with 329 years of success, quality and innovation behind us. We've helped millions of individuals and businesses thrive, creating financial and digital solutions that the world now takes for granted. An important and growing presence in the USA, we offer careers providing endless opportunity.

We are currently in the early stages of implementing a hybrid working environment, which means that many colleagues spend part of their working hours at home and part in the office, depending on the nature of the role they are in. We’re flexible on how this works and it may continue to change and evolve. Depending on your team, typically this means that colleagues spend a minimum of between 20% to 60% of their time in the office, which could be over a week, a month or a quarter. However, some colleagues may choose to spend more time in the office over a typical period than their role type requires. We also have a flexible working process where, subject to business needs, all colleagues globally are able to request work patterns to reflect their personal circumstances. Please discuss the detail of the working pattern options for the role with the hiring manager.

What will you be doing?

  • Developing code in line with the stories that have been agreed as part of the delivery team
  • Engaging in providing solutions to the stories that have been submitted
  • Operating in the delivery process and working with other delivery team members to make sure that the focus is on business value delivery
  • Ensuring that all development is in line with Barclays & IPMDM Standards
  • Providing L3 Support as and when required across all applications
  • Applying design & system architecture skills to ensure continual improvements in performance and stability of core Instrument and Price systems
  • Interacting with Operations and Technology teams in multiple locations
  • Handling challenging situations e.g., resistance to change due to nature of STP/Efficiencies or changing mind-set on technical solution or approach

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelors or master’s degree, preferable in Computer systems
  • Ability to contribute and challenge within a team to improve performance, with the ability to communicate with peers and senior members of the team
  • Technically able who can perform complex data analysis and data modelling
  • Capability to employ data driven mind set to add value to the organisation

Skills that will help you in the role:

  • Excellent Perl/shell experience, with sound ETL feeds development background; solid grasp of messaging technologies (MQ, Solace) is a plus
  • Exceptional query writing and SQL skills primarily around Relational databases (MS SQL Server and Oracle DB)
  • Experience with .Net or Core Java with exposure to WebServices
  • Exposure to Development tools such as: Eclipse, IntelliJ IDEA, TeamCity, Jira, GIT, Stash, Chef, Nolio

Where will you be working?

At Barclays, we are proud to be redefining the future of finance and here at Whippany we are defining the future of the workplace and the future of the way we work and live.
We are creating a unique community, one of four strategic tech-enabled hubs that will redefine opportunity for everyone who works here. Whatever you do at Whippany, you’ll have every chance to build a world-class career in this world-class environment.
