South Dakota State University’s Department of Allied and Population Health (APH) is offering an exciting career opportunity for two experienced Respiratory Therapists and educators in the faculty rank of Instructor. We are looking for creative and innovative professionals to join our rapidly growing, innovative and inter-disciplinary department. The Allied and Population Health Department houses faculty from respiratory care, public health, medical laboratory sciences, and pharmacy. Inter-disciplinary collaboration is fostered and encouraged. These are 12-month, full-time, benefit-eligible positions with a desired start date of Spring 2023. These positions are supervised by the Department Head of the Allied and Population Health Department.

RESPONSIBILITIES :
The Respiratory Care Instructor is responsible for laboratory and clinical area instruction. The Instructor will adhere to the policies of the clinical affiliate and the university. Their primary area of work will be at one of the three hospitals (Huron, Brookings, Madison) in the State of South Dakota, but their work may extend to other hospitals or health systems, as needed. South Dakota has three health systems at which our faculty and students in the respiratory care program are placed including: Sanford USD Medical Center and the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, and Monument Health in Rapid City. The successful candidate will:
  • Organize and teach clinical and laboratory courses as assigned by the APH Department Head to align with CoARC and NBRC objectives/learning outcomes.
  • Promote excellence in teaching and service by setting high standards of academic and professional performance.
  • Perform respiratory care services, including without limitation, performance improvement activities, audit summaries, quality enhancement activities, teaching services, training services, and other tasks as are reasonably requested.
  • Evaluate and report student performance and progress and maintain accurate records.
  • Request and maintain instructional equipment for classroom or laboratory use.
  • Maintain communication with other respiratory care professionals regionally and nationally through membership with the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC).
  • Engage in professional development activities and seek information about new trends and ideas.
  • Assist in maintaining and enhancing communication within the hospital and community.
  • Supervise the clinical respiratory care students and assure clinical rotation schedules are carried out at the clinical affiliate hospital.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures of South Dakota State University, clinical affiliates, and any other state, federal or accrediting agency mandates.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Sponsorship is not available for this position; must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Master’s degree in respiratory care (or associated field), or a bachelor’s degree in the field plus three years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist.
  • Valid RRT credential, and current state license or eligibility to earn licensure in South Dakota.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate good organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrate excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work as a contributing team member.
  • Demonstrate use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs.
  • Valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Two years of teaching experience in an accredited respiratory care program.
  • Four years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with a minimum of two years in clinical practice.
  • A willingness to pursue further education in the field of Respiratory Care.
  • Formal teacher training and experience with both in-person and on-line instruction.
  • Demonstrates ability to assume responsibility, deal effectively with problems, and exercise independent judgment with decision-making.

The Allied and Population Health Department, within the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions is an interdisciplinary department consisting of practitioners and researchers working to improve the human condition. In addition to the two respiratory care programs (A.S. and B.S.) the department offers seven other academic programs., from disciplines such as public health, pharmacy, medical laboratory sciences, and respiratory care. The Allied and Population Health Department houses faculty from public health, medical laboratory sciences, pharmacy, and respiratory care. Inter-disciplinary collaboration is fostered and encouraged among faculty and students. Faculty work with collaborating institutions across the state and nation. Students in these programs complete clinical experiences with our collaborative partners and affiliate sites across America. In addition to teaching, the department houses the new Community Practice Innovations Center (CPIC) which focuses on community-based research with an emphasis on access to care, population health, and improving health outcomes.
The South Dakota State University’s Respiratory Program is the only CoARC accredited Respiratory Program in South Dakota (SD). The program has strong partnerships with the major healthcare systems in SD. We have graduated several students since the inception of the program in the 1980’s, and are proud to report that our alumni make up a majority of the workforce across SD. We have consistently recorded 100% job placement for graduates and offer a very dynamic working environment for faculty.
