Job Summary:

The Response Team Officer is a member of a team which will be called upon when quick and decisive handling of emergency situations arises and where a show of force, containment and/or crowd control utilizing less lethal tactics and equipment is required. Members of this team will have other regular positions within Irwin County Detention Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Gather intelligence in a rapid and accurate manner while working under stringent constraints – time and pressure.

· Handles classified information and disseminate appropriately.

· Act quickly when called to respond to an emergency situation.

· Operate riot control devices, interpret rules and regulations and establish priorities.

· Supervises inmates in living areas and recreational activities. Supervises inmates and visitors in visitation areas.

· Serves as correctional officer; coordinates, and monitors inmate movements, conduct counts, and provides emergency response.

· Provides security in treatment activities and supervises labor crews in the kitchen and other specialized areas.

· Ensures prompt and appropriate assistance to inmates in the event of injury, illness, and emotional trauma.

· Prepares reports and maintains daily logs as required.

· Initiates disciplinary reports.

· Conduct shakedown for contraband materials, either individually or as part of a specialized team.

· Promotes facility cleanliness and reports need for maintenance and/or repairs.

· Serves as a member of special teams to respond.

· Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills/Abilities:

· Ability to deal with dangerous situations inside a correctional facility.

· Ability to be trained with tactical equipment, chemical agents and other defensive weapons.

· Ability to handle the most dangerous kinds of situations that can occur inside a jail.

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

· Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

· Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.

· Ability to maintain high tolerance to mental stress.

· Ability to work outdoors in varying climatic conditions.

· Knowledge of security device operations and capabilities; riot and disturbance control concepts and procedures; inmate behavior; institutional rules and regulations; LaSalle security manual; ACA standards.

· Able to attend 8 hours of training required each month on various subjects including dynamic entry, stealth movement, firearms, and defensive tactics.

Education and Experience:

· High School Diploma or GED Certificate.

· Must have a valid Georgia driver’s license.

· Post preferred.

· Applicants must have at least 1 year of experience and a minimum of 1 year of active duty in a correctional setting.

· Successful completion training courses and on‐the‐job training as required by facility training standards.

NOTE: Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the Training Program in full.

· Long periods of continuous standing and walking for 4 hours or more per shift

· Frequent periods of sitting for 30 minutes or more

· Repetitive climbing of stairs to reach the assigned areas and working at heights

· Occasional kneeling, squatting, and bending to perform “pat” or “strip” searches

· Frequent grasping, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, or twisting

· Occasionally responding to altercations and occasional restraining and securing assaultive offenders

· Ability to respond rapidly to potential security and/medical codes/issues

· Frequent transferring and transporting offenders by walking or riding in various vehicles such as vans, buses, and other forms of transportation

· Continuous periods of operating/driving company vehicles to pick up and transport offenders for 4 hours or more per shift

· Remaining awake and alert while on duty for 12 or more hours per shift

· Occasional lifting and carrying up to 50-100 lbs.

· Ability to occasionally withstand direct or indirect exposure to OC spray

· Exposure for up to 12 hours or more per shift of outdoor elements and temperatures

· Ability to hear and understand verbal communication
