Job description
We have an opening for a Roofer/Carpenter. You will perform work at a journey level including roofing inspections, modifications, alterations, installation, and maintenance services to all LLNL facilities. This position is in the Infrastructure Maintenance and Utilities Department, performing work at both Site 200 and Site 300 location in Tracy, CA.
You will
- Perform maintenance and repair of membrane, flashings, and surfacing on a variety of in-place systems, including conventional built-up roofing (BUR), with gravel, smooth or mineral granular surfacing and other systems such as thermo-plastic, singly-ply, sprayed in place polyurethane, modified bitumen, architectural/structural and fluid applied systems.
- Repair and replace failed systems components with both hot-applied or cold process materials to assure continued waterproofing performance.
- Layout work within close tolerance and analyze task assignments for details in fabrication and installation of materials. Work from blueprint sketches.
- Prepare standard reports, permit requirements, deficiency forms, and preventive maintenance work requests.
- Effectively and safely use materials, power tools and hand tools utilized in the roofing trade and drive motor vehicles; operate forklift and overhead cranes.
- Provide strong customer service to interact with personnel including immediate supervisor, building coordinators, maintenance coordinators, ES&H technicians, and other craft personnel.
- Responsible and accountable for performing tasks in accordance with all safety regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and completion of apprenticeship training program or full-time, journey-level work experience in the roofing trade.
- Basic journey level experience in the roofing and carpenter trade with experience in industrial/commercial type roof installation, maintenance, and repair. Experience in roof systems inspection and ability to recommend repair techniques when necessary.
- Proficiency in the use of all hand tools and power tools of the trade including but not limited to portable power tools, heavy duty stationary tools, scaffolding, compressors, pneumatic tool, and power activated tools.
- Experience using Motion Stopping Systems (MSS) or fall arrest systems and a working knowledge of the requirements for fall protection.
- Proven ability to analyze task assignments for details of materials and experience and proficiency in layouts and installation and ability to read blueprints.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with personnel of all levels.
- Basic computer skills necessary to communicate, report time and complete web-based training, standard forms, and reports.
- Basic knowledge of safety policies and procedures, OSHA laws and regulations.
- Possess a valid California Driver's License, operate forklift and incidental crane.
- Ability to lift up to 85 pounds on occasion, climb both fixed and portable ladders, become medically qualified to wear respiratory and protective equipment performing in adverse conditions consistent with a field environment and have the physical strength, mobility, and endurance consistent with the wearing and use of protective clothing and equipment.
- Ability to work scheduled and/or emergency overtime at both Site 200 in Livermore and Site 300 in Tracy, CA.
Qualifications We Desire
- Knowledge of asbestos in roofing systems and training combined with experience working with roof systems that contain asbestos

Site 300
Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).
Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.

The Laboratory performs a variety of work, including some that may fall under Davis Bacon Act requirements. When work scope falls under this Act, the Laboratory complies with the prevailing wage requirements.
