- Maintains knowledge of laws, regulations, and best practices related to academic school counseling
- Ensures compliance with HIPAA and FERPA
- Orients new students to the school
- Works with administration to develop student schedules
- Provides services to students in the areas of academic and career development
- Counsels students individually and in small groups
- Conducts classroom guidance activities
- Organizes standardized testing
- Helps implement restorative practices
- Reviews school data frequently to ensure that the academic school counseling program is meeting the academic, career and personal/social development needs of all students
- Exposes students to career exploration and interest inventories
- Reviews school data frequently to ensure that the school counseling program is meeting the academic, career and personal/social development of all students
- Participates in professional development and networking conferences and events
- Provides guidance and resources to all district administrators concerning academic counseling
- Is responsible for listening to parent, student, and employee concerns related to academic counseling needs
- Is responsible for the updating and maintaining student records related to academic counseling
- Conducts academic screenings as required, needed, and/or requested
- Thorough understanding of Illinois Learning Standards
- Thorough knowledge of instructional strategies that lead to increased student achievement
- Thorough knowledge of best practices in academic school counseling
- Thorough understanding of the content being taught
- Strong planning and implementation skills
- Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing
- Strong collaboration skills
- Strong data analysis skills
- Knowledge/implementation of restorative discipline practices
- Strong understanding of equitable classroom practices
- High expectations for all students
- Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations

Position Summary: The Academic School Counselor provides appropriate services for middle school students in an atmosphere and environment conducive to the students’ intellectual development.
