JOB FUNCTION: To conduct needs assessments and advocate for policies, programs, and services to meet educational and mental health needs of all students, and to support safe school climates conducive to learning.

DISTRICT DESCRIPTION: Houghton Lake Community Schools has approximately 1,200 students and is located in the center of the Lower Peninsula in northern Michigan. Our families enjoy the benefits of living in an area thriving on tourism as most of our district surrounds beautiful Houghton
Lake. We have about 80 schools of choice students from outside of the district and county.
Currently, 17% of our students qualify for special education services.

The District has three preschool classrooms with additional preschools available within the community. There is one PreK-6th grade elementary school, one 7th -12th grade junior/senior high school and extensive alternative education opportunities. Career and technical education opportunities are available as well as Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment college courses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Provide crisis intervention, counseling services, support and case management
● Maintain student and family confidentiality
● Collaborate with families and school personnel to conduct psychosocial assessment and diagnosis of behavioral disabilities with recommendations and/or environmental manipulations at the school, home and/or in the community with periodic reevaluations

● Collaborate with families and school personnel to address students’ social, emotional, and behavioral obstacles to academic success

● Link students and families with school and community resources
● Participate in case conferences involving other school personnel and community resources
● Maintain appropriate school records and provide written reports and communications

● Follow up on student issues referred by school personnel
● Develop, facilitate, and coordinate prevention activities and intervention strategies
● Collaborate with school groups to develop coping, social, and decision-making skills
● Participate in the Individual Educational Plan (IEP) process as required
● Other general counseling and administrative functions as needed.
● Establish and maintain strong connections with community-based organizations, cultural institutions, local and city-wide businesses
● Consistently integrate community resources from those partnerships
● Establish and maintain regular personal contact with families and student caregivers

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
● Master’s degree in social work with school social work course work.
● Licensure by the State of MI Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Board of Social

Work, School Social Work Approval by State of Michigan Department of Education.
● An understanding of the IEP process; familiarity with State of MI special education rules and regulations;

Preferred:
● Substantial expertise in rural education, including significant work with elementary school families and students as partners in learning, and integration of a wide range of unique, community resources.
