POSITION DESCRIPTION

Currently, HGL is seeking an Environmental Scientist I in our Reston, VA officesupporting Department of Defense (DoD) installations located in the Washington D.C. metro area and EPA Superfund sites predominantly in EPA Region 3 (VA, MD, DE, WV) with overnight travel to non-local project sites. Work executed will be a combination of in-office (~25%) and fieldwork (~75%).

Responsibilities/Duties

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

The person hired for this role will be responsible for:

  • Execution of environmental field tasks and related office work, including collecting environmental samples (groundwater, soil, sediment, surface water) in an outdoor setting using various types of sampling equipment.
  • Ensuring field operations are conducted in a safe manner in accordance with project specific Site Safety and Health Plans / Health and Safety Plans.
  • Record field data and complete associated sampling documentation.
  • Assist Project Managers and project team members in the preparation of plans, reports, and technical presentations.
  • Coordination with vendors and subcontractors.
  • Support planning of field investigation and remediation work.
  • Assist in data analysis and interpretation of environmental data using statistical and visualization tools. Perform data entry, generate tables.

Required Skills

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

The ideal candidate will need the following as a foundation for success in this role:

  • A minimum of a BS in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related environmental field of study.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
  • Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel, and other MS Office applications.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Skills

WHAT YOU NEED TO STAND OUT

  • Prior environmental sampling experience.
  • Experience in environmental data analysis and management.
  • Knowledge of RCRA, CERCLA regulatory frameworks.
  • OSHA 40-hr HAZWOPER certification.

To perform the duties of this position, a person will need to be in good physical health and be able to lift up to 30 lbs. The successful candidate will be required to possess or obtain OSHA HAZWOPER certification upon employment.
