JOB SUMMARY: As a Senior Archaeologist / Project Director, the employee will coordinate and manage a variety of archaeology projects within the Great Basin Region, as well as manage the cultural resources program within the Great Basin. General duties may include project coordination and management, staffing support, permitting management and end-of-year reporting, client and agency coordination, pre-field literature reviews, background and archival research, fieldwork (Class III inventories, site and isolate documentation), NRHP eligibility evaluations, deliverables coordination and reviews, deliverables submissions to agencies, proposal writing and budgeting, and general marketing, among other duties, as assigned. Travel costs to and from field projects will be provided or reimbursed when fieldwork is necessary. Field project opportunities generally range from single-day projects to multiple 5-, 7-, or 10-day field sessions, depending on the size and needs of the project.

  • Ability to serve as a Principal Investigator/Project Director for the project.
  • Ability to conduct Class III (intensive pedestrian) cultural resources inventory.
  • Ability to independently document archaeological sites and IOs/IFs.
  • Ability to evaluate resources for NRHP-eligibility
  • Ability to survey an average of 50 acres/8 miles per day.
  • Ability to carry personal health and safety equipment (i.e., personal water, sunscreen, etc.) when surveying.
  • Ability to work in moderate weather conditions (fluctuating temperatures and inclement weather, including rain and snow).
  • Ability to perform work duties independently and efficiently, while working in a team setting.
  • Ability to follow instruction and to make adjustments when provided feedback.
  • Is proficient in prehistoric and/or historic archaeology in the Great Basin.
  • Is proficient in documenting archaeological sites and IOs/IFs in the Great Basin.
  • Support, actively participate, and act in accordance with Wright’s and Transcon Environmental’ s culture of safety and employee ownership.
  • Comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintains knowledge of and follows all company policies and procedures.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Has completed coursework leading to a degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field:
    • Crew Member – minimum 2 years of college-level coursework and completion of a field school.
    • Crew Chief – bachelor’s degree, completion of a field school, and 1 year of professional experience.
    • Field Director – bachelor’s degree, completion of a field school, 2 years of professional experience, and is permitted or qualified for agency permitting based on the SOI Professional Qualification Standards.
    • Principal Investigator – graduate degree, completion of a field school, 2 years professional experience as a Field Director, and is permitted or qualified for agency permitting based on the SOI Professional Qualification Standards.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Proficiency in using tablets (Apple iPad or Samsung Galaxy) to document cultural resources.
  • Proficiency with sub-meter GPS receiver.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 applications (for phone or tablet).
  • Permitted or permittable on BLM lands in the Great Basin (Principal Investigator).
  • Previous NHPA, NEPA, FERC, and/or other cultural or environmental trainings.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Authored a master’s degree thesis.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: The physical activities of this position constantly require effective talking, hearing, sitting, walking, and standing functions. The position also often involves sedentary work where sitting is required most of the time, with occasional standing or walking. The position also requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Must be able to perform activities with close visual acuity, such as reading a computer screen and reading print material. The functions of this position are conducted in a temperature-controlled environment.
INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The occupant of this position must be able to perform the responsibilities of the position well under pressure. The position requires adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure. This position requires the ability to deal with and find a resolution to problems and maintain a productive working relationship with employees which may be interrupted frequently to meet the needs and requests of others. It also requires adaptability to fluctuate between priorities daily while being responsive to needs as they arise.
