Situated in the Jerome L. Greene Science Center on Columbia’s Manhattanville campus, the state-of-the-art building offers an environment where the highest level of scholarly scientific research takes place on a daily basis, with the benefit of being located in the heart of New York, one of the world’s most vibrant and culturally rich cities.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Associate Director will support the growing international population within the ZI, which is fast becoming the largest international population on campus.
Responsibilities
- Works with the Exec Dir to support the international academic research and scholar population; create an environment of programmatic HR activities offering assistance, information and knowledge supporting camaraderie within the international community that relies on ZI HR throughout their academic appointment cycle.
- Strategize and implement HR and Academic Affairs opportunities for supporting international researchers; develop engagement initiatives connecting resources from within ZI and across the University supporting scholarly experiences. Write program descriptions, reports and proposals. Incorporate up to date information from CU related to academic appointments for international scholars.
- Serves as the primary ZI HR advisor to labs and PIs who are considering recruiting international research scholars; analyzes requests, provides direction and triages as appropriate within ZI HR staff members. Manages visiting scientists and visiting scholars.
- Designs a welcoming onboarding and orientation program for researchers, postdocs, students and scholars; acclimating them to ZI and supporting an environment of cultural integration, with frequent interaction and offering support for continued development. Ensures a high-level welcome experience for new international scholars.
- Acts as liaison with University partners establishing professional relationships within CU, including the OPA at Columbia; collaborate on HR and Academic Affairs initiatives that support the ZI research community.
- Identify timelines and milestones for projects, establishing short- and long-term work plans with check in points communicated and in consultation with the Exec Director.
- Works with the Exec Director to support new ZI leadership initiatives aimed at specialized research and scholars’ programs, visitors and students, including the new postdoctoral fellow program.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years related experience working with an international population; speaking a foreign language is required.

The candidate will be strong communicator with a keen aptitude for situational awareness and the ability to foster an inclusive workplace where diversity is valued; will be able to communicate effectively in writing and will have exceptional interpersonal and presentation skills. Must be able to work on cross functional teams with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines with a demonstrated track record for bringing structure to unstructured processes.
