Job Description
This position will lead the group within Talen’s Fossil organization that is responsible for managing environmental liabilities. This group is expected to set strategy for Talen’s environmental liabilities and successfully execute environmental remediation projects with safety and environmental/regulatory compliance as first priority. The team is accountable for developing and executing the best possible outcomes for Talen.
Location
Central Pennsylvania or Houston preferred, but flexible
Key Responsibilities
  • Set strategic direction for Talen environmental liabilities
  • Work closely with Talen corporate environmental group
  • Remain current and involved with EPA and other regulatory changes involving coal combustion residuals (CCR’s) and effluent limitation guidelines (ELG’s)
  • Interact with regulators/government agencies/government officials on interests involving environmental liabilities
  • Successfully implement environmental remediation projects, including closing ash impoundments in place or by removal
  • Explore beneficial use of ash into solutions, where it is cost effective
  • Work collaboratively with the leadership of the operating sites with environmental liabilities
  • Work with accounting on Asset Retirement Obligations and environmental contingencies
  • Ensure that all projects are delivered safely and environmentally/regulatory compliant and on-time, within scope and within budget
  • Coordinate and collaborate with internal resources and third parties/vendors for the successful execution of projects
  • Develop comprehensive project plans from inception to completion to be shared with internal stakeholders
  • Prepare budget and cost estimates, schedules and develop business cases
  • Perform risk evaluation to identify and minimize potential risks and track risks throughout project
  • Measure and track project performance using appropriate project management tools and techniques, make adjustment as needed, and identify areas for improvement.
  • Prepare and deliver updates to leadership to report project progress, costs, and risks
  • Up to 25% travel at times depending on project development
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Skills and Candidate Qualities
  • 5+ years of experience managing environmental liabilities, particularly ash impoundments
  • Experience dealing with environmental agencies and government entities preferred
  • Experience in closing ash sites in place or by removal preferred
  • Knowledge of ash characteristics, ash handling, dewatering, groundwater monitoring and civil/structural preferred
  • Strong project management and related experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in appropriate field of study or equivalent work experience
  • Strong leadership skills are a must
  • Strong familiarity with project management software tools, methodologies, and best practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and extremely resourceful
  • Can analyze project options and developing economic cost analysis to aid in selection of most prudent resolution.
  • Team building and conflict resolution attributes are necessary to pull together and utilize the personnel on a team effective and efficiently
  • Customer service skills to listen, speak in a clear and concise manner in contact with people like the public, inspectors, and owners so that goals are met
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Financial acumen understanding project costs, Net Present Value, P&L’s, balance sheets, asset retirement obligations, etc.
Physical Requirements
  • May require frequent standing, walking, squatting, and reaching
  • Ability to work different hours as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred
