The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating, and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. Salary Information

The salary range for Senior Engineer is $136,128.72 - $172,164.72.

This amount includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

Per the City’s COVID19 Mandatory Vaccination Policy, the City requires all employees starting on or after February 11, 2022 to provide proof of vaccination as a condition of employment absent a documented medical and/or religious exemption. Proof of vaccination means that employees are required to be “up-to-date” with regards to the COVID-19 vaccine. Consistent with the Santa Clara County Public Health Order issued on December 28, 2021, "up-to-date" means that employees are required to be vaccinated with the entire recommended initial series of a COVID-19 vaccine (two doses of the Pfizer, Moderna or Novavax COVID-19 vaccine or a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine).

The Department of Public Works is recruiting to fill a Senior Engineer within the Airport Capital Program Division. The Senior Engineer(s) in the Airport Capital Program Division are primarily responsible for coordinating, leading, and directing the delivery of capital improvement projects for a wide variety of facilities and infrastructure. This position provides leadership and oversight for a team of Engineers, in the design and construction of various civil improvement projects at the Norman Y Mineta San Jose International Airport including airfield improvements, security, utilities, roadways, and various other terminal related capital and infrastructure projects.

Key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

    • Leading, mentoring, and supervising staff by establishing goals, tracking performance, creating a positive work environment, maximizing staff development opportunities, and providing appropriate recognition
    • Providing effective leadership during all phases of the project to ensure on-time and on-budget project delivery, as well as engineering expertise and training to staff and other workgroups to resolve complex or technical issues
    • Participating in the development and revision of standard engineering specifications, criteria and policy and procedure statements
    • Managing budget preparation and administration
    • Monitoring budget and controlling expenditures for projects during all phases of the project
    • Coordinating with Division Manager in developing project and staffing plans to address workload projections and budget constraints
    • Supervising, reviewing, and approving the preparation and review of designs, plans, calculations, estimates, specifications, and contract documents for construction projects or other related engineering projects prepared by subordinates and consultants
    • Preparing and negotiating conditions of consultant agreements and managing consultant work efforts
    • Providing excellent customer service while coordinating with internal and external City stakeholders
    • Reviewing, evaluating, and approving all written documents relating to all phases of the project, checking for grammar, punctuation, formatting, and technical related errors, including the editing of all written proposals and memos

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited College or University in the required professional engineering discipline (Civil, Mechanical, Structural Engineering or a similar field).

Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience.

Licenses or Certificates:

    • Certificate of Registration in a relevant professional engineering discipline issued by the California Board of Registration.
    • Possession of a valid State of California driver's license may be required.
