Position: Functional Safety Engineer

Nexteer is looking for a candidate who can apply the ISO26262 functional safety process to systems like Electric Power Steering, Autonomous Steering Systems, and Steer by Wire Systems in development. The System Safety Engineer supports the full lifecycle of the safety process - from concept and requirements through design and analysis to implementation and testing. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in embedded systems.

This position will be located in Saginaw, MI, with some occasional travel to Auburn Hills Corporate Office.

Job Responsibilities:

• Lead system safety activities for assigned projects related to Electric Power Steering, Steer by Wire, and Autonomous Steering Systems
• Participate in safety process improvement and template development activities
• Provide guidance and mentorship to other team members on Functional Safety
• Lead Safety Analysis such as FTA, FMEDA, and FMEA
• Lead Safety Requirements development activities for Nexteer’s next generation Software “platform”, including traceability
• Participate in the development of safety strategies and robust failsafe or fault tolerant architectures
• Review and approve test procedures related to safety requirements, including linkages
• Conduct assessment, audit, confirmation, verification reviews for other team members' work
• Compile safety case and create safety case report
• Stay abreast of new ideas/technology for SbW, ADAS, SEooC, and SOTIF

Required Skills:

• 8 or more years of experience in automotive, electronics, safety, embedded software, or mechanical areas
• 3 or more years of experience with ISO 26262, IEC 61508 or similar
• Experience with safety analysis such as FTA, FMEDA, FMEA
• Excellent organization and documentation abilities
• Excellent communication skills and a desire to work with people
• Working knowledge of automotive engineering and chassis systems
• Strong computer skills, especially in spreadsheets and simulation tools
• Valid US Driver’s License

Preferred Skills:

• Understanding of Requirements Management in IBM DOORS or DNG
• Background in automotive engineering and chassis systems
• Proficient at project management processes and tools
• Can perform basic FTA
• Can conduct failure analysis

Educational Requirements:

Degree: Bachelors required, Masters preferred

Majors: Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, Mathematics, Physics
