Overview:
The Senior Legal Counsel of Gilbane Building Company will be responsible for providing legal support to several business units across the country depending on the location of the selected candidate. The referred location for this position is Chicago, but other potential locations for this position include Houston, Cleveland, Columbus, Milwaukee, San Jose or Phoenix.

Among other things, the Senior Legal Counsel will advise the Company’s business unit leaders concerning contracting with project owners and subcontractors, dispute resolution, labor and employment, employee training and other legal and compliance issues arising within the construction operations of the assigned business units.

This position will be an integral part of the Legal Department that supports Gilbane Building Company and its subsidiaries. The attorney in this position will report to the Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, who is located in the Company’s Arlington, Virginia office. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communications skills are essential.
Responsibilities:
The Senior Legal Counsel will provide hands-on advice in the following practice areas for the Company, among others:

  • Construction contracts, including the AIA and ConsensusDocs families of documents;
  • Establishment of strategic alliances and joint ventures with teaming partners;
  • Insurance and bonding for construction projects;
  • Claims preparation;
  • Selection and management of outside counsel;
  • Dispute resolution, including litigation, mediation and arbitration

The ideal Senior Legal Counsel will possess solid academic credentials from a top tier U.S. law school and approximately 10 years of legal experience counseling businesses in the practice areas listed above, including at least 5 years of relevant in-house experience. In particular, the ideal candidate will have relevant experience as in-house counsel for a medium-sized or large construction company and will be familiar with public and private contracting for institutional, commercial and residential projects, including developer projects. An undergraduate degree in construction/engineering is also a plus.

Travel
The applicant must be willing to travel on occasion, sometimes with short notice. The travel required for the role is estimated at approximately 25%.
