Given our growing business, Arup is seeking a talented and motivated Senior Rail Engineer who wants to accelerate their career by joining the Rail Team. You will be focusing on transportation project work, primarily focusing on railway planning and design projects. Our team is currently working on major projects that will have significant positive impact like the North East Corridor Strategic Development Plan (Connect NEC), VIA High Frequency Rail, and Penn Station Expansion projects. Our teams also support roadway, development, and civil projects like site development, solar farms, and transit-oriented design.
We are looking for a civil engineer to provide design development, project management, and multi-disciplinary coordination in the design process by overseeing internal teams and sub consultant partners while interfacing with the client. The position will also require support of business development efforts including client and teaming partner engagement, preparation of proposals, and participation on professional activities such as attendance and presentation at conferences. The ideal candidates will be looking to further their career and gain invaluable experience within an established multi-disciplinary engineering firm in a position of responsibility.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Participating in and leading design activities
- Supervising junior and assisting senior staff on a variety of projects
- Writing reports for internal and external purposes based on findings
- Presenting technical material in traditional and innovative ways for review by technical and non-technical audiences
- Understanding trends and best practices in Rail in North America
You will:
- Foster creativity and innovation coordinating with a multi-disciplinary team to meet project goals and deliver high quality technical excellence
- Use your expertise in Rail to manage elements of the design process of a multi-disciplinary design team where Arup is the Prime or lead designer
- Participate in local and national engineering associations for example ASCE or AREMA
- Ensure the design compliance with Quality Management systems
- Understand Client’s goals and aspirations and incorporate them into the design and management efforts of projects
- Participate in client user groups and stakeholder meetings
- Facilitate and track the resolution of design decisions
- Act as Project Manager on projects or support the Project Manager in establishing and monitoring the design scope, schedule and resource plan for the design team
- Coordinate communication and flow of information between design team members
- Coordinate activities and deliverables between design team members
- Assess client needs and identify relevant connections within Arup capabilities and services
- Provide guidance and expertise to deliver construction ready design packages
- Support business development efforts to secure planning work and build client relationships.
- Leveraging connections with professional colleagues, developing marketing leads, preparing marketing proposals and materials
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree/Master’s degree in Civil Engineering
- PE License in Texas (or ability to get one within one year)
Experience Requirements:
o Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in Civil Engineering Fundamentals
o Minimum of 5 years of design experience preferably in the rail transit or transportation markets
o Experience in project management of complex transit facilities and/or systems
o Experience with direct interfacing with clients as a prime consultant manager is key, including quality assurance/control
o TXDOT (or other major transit agency) and design-build experience is highly preferable
o Experience with construction contract document preparation, management, and sequencing

o Must be self-motivated, proactive, and willing to take on new challenges.
o The ability to work under pressure, prioritize effectively, manage deadlines and exceptional organization skills required for our rapidly changing environment
o Strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for team-based working
o Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills with colleagues and clients of all levels
o Demonstrable understanding of owner/client capital project drivers and priorities
o Understanding of construction project procurement approaches, and ability to understand project schedule and cost estimate documents is preferred.
o Fluent with standard MS Office applications, and Inroad/RailTrack (or similar modeling software)
o Experience with MS Project or Primavera a plus
