Overview:

The Performance Engineering Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a senior computer systems engineer to deliver innovative solutions that contribute to both groundbreaking scientific research and the implementation of regulatory, integrated data management solutions. The Performance Engineering Group resides within the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate and goes past traditional approaches to develop new methods for meeting user needs across a wide range of domains. In this position, you will be intricately involved in the design of data systems needed to meet the program sponsor’s requirements with a focus on ensuring the most efficient data processing possible.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the architecture of an existing regulatory data system and play a significant role in defining future architectural changes and enhancements based on sponsor requirements and within budget constraints.
  • Collaborate with System Administrators, DBAs, and Software Engineers in support of production data systems and applications striking a balance between lending expertise and providing an inclusive environment where others’ ideas are considered.
  • Interface with Network Engineers as necessary for implementation of architectural designs, changes to existing configurations, and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain configurations of application delivery controllers.
  • Maintain network diagrams.
  • Troubleshoot problems with production systems and recommend or implement corrective actions.
  • Create splunk searches, alerts, reports, and dashboards used for monitoring system performance and functionality.
  • Provide technical assistance to other staff and users.
  • Analyze new and emerging technologies and tools for applicability to the job.


Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, or a related field and 8+ years of related experience.
  • Prior experience with one or more of the following: Oracle Database Server, Oracle WebLogic Server, Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, Oracle REST Data Services (ORDS), Oracle Application Express, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD-LDS), Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Windows Server, Splunk, DISA STIGs, SAML v2, VMWare, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, CyberArk, DevOps, Software Development Lifecycle, and SSL certificates.
  • Experience configuring Apache HTTP Server.
  • Experience with splunk.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and Project.
  • Experience with cloud solutions and delivery models (AWS preferred).


Special Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain a DOE L or Q clearance. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience configuring Ivanti Connect Secure platforms.
  • Experience configuring FortiNet FortiADC platforms.
  • Experience in a government environment.
  • Ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary, collaborative team.
