DEFINITION

This is a semi-skilled, full time non-exempt position under the direct supervision of the Sewer Collection Crew Leader/Director of Utilities. This employee performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and construction of wastewater collections system components, grounds, facilities, equipment, and related customer service and management functions

EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Employee is exposed to extreme noise of equipment; mechanical, electrical, and explosive hazards; fumes and odors of sewage lines, hydrogen sulfide, methane; dust of excavations and toxic substances such as paints, solvents. He or she will work and/or walk for long periods of time on various types of surfaces including slippery, uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Work is performed indoors and outdoors at field locations within the entire wastewater collection system.

Continuous standing, frequent walking, bending and stooping, reaching pushing/pulling and twisting of wrist in use of tools; Occasional sitting, squatting; Infrequent crawling, climbing, balancing. Vision must be sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate vehicles and equipment

Employee must hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Performs maintenance, cleaning and repair duties related to the City’s wastewater collection system.

Cleans and rods sewer mains and laterals to remove debris from inside pipe. Vacuums debris from lift stations and related structures.

Performs trenching, shoring, and backfilling.

Removes weeds and debris from pump stations, easements, grounds, and outfall lines.

Repairs asphalt and concrete after repairs to wastewater collection system; Operates closed circuit televising system; televises underground sewer lines, storm drains, and sewer laterals.

Identifies any signs of blockage/debris that may interrupt flow of the sanitary sewer or storm drains;

Identifies major problems with pipes including cracks, damage, holes, and collapsed pipe

Tests sewer systems for faulty connections or leaks as well as for illegal connections.

Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment, and tools including service trucks, dump trucks, water trucks, vacuum trucks, skiploader, backhoe and related attachments, large trailers, trench tamper, hydro tamper, concrete and asphalt cutting saws, root saws, jackhammer, and hand and power tools;

Sets traffic control including safety devices, signs, and barricades; ensures safety of public and work crew.

Provides courteous customer service responding to questions and inquiries from the general public; responds to customer problems or complaints.

Maintains records of basic operations, maintenance and work performed.

May serve as crew leader as assigned over a small crew.

May participate in training new employees in work practices and in how to apply policies, procedures, and standards to specific situations.

Requirements:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of or ability to learn characteristics of wastewater collection systems.

Ability to use maintenance and construction equipment and tools.

Knowledge of basic mathematical principles.

Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations.

Ability to provide customer service and assistance to citizens.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under sometimes unfavorable conditions.

Ability to read and write for successful job performance.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED required.

Valid Tennessee Driver's License required.

Sewer license required within 24 months of hire.
