JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Number of Positions: 4
Under supervision, performs manual work related to the assembly, installation, repair, and removal of a variety of signs used for traffic control and public safety and performs related duties as required.
Duties:
- Retrieves work orders while in the field from 311 system using laptop computers.
- Reviews work orders gathers and loads supplies (i.e., signs, bolts, pipe and banding wire materials) for sign installation jobs
- Drives a van to work locations and sets up barricades and safety cones as needed to cordon off work areas and perform work in compliance with safety rules and regulations
- Assembles signs and brackets and fastens signs to posts
- Mounts and tightens steel bands to fasten signs to poles (i.e., streetlight poles)
- Removes damaged, hazardous, and outdated signs
- Operates a hand-held hydraulic pole/post driver to install pole sleeves into soil for dig system installations
- Uses a concrete drill and ram set to drill holes in concrete for sidewalk drill installations
- Operates power drills, ratchets, cutters, and grinders to prepare signs for hanging, to mount and tighten steel bands and to cut protruding bolts
- Works from a bucket on lift truck or van, riding up in bucket to reach locations for signs over 35’ high (i.e., mast arms on traffic signal poles) and mounts and fastens signs
- Prepares daily activity reports listing supplies used, number of signs installed or removed, and time spent on each job

Days: Monday – Friday
Hours: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm
THESE ARE SEASONAL POSITIONS
One year of experience assembling or hanging signs; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licensure, Certification, or other Qualifications:
A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required

NOTE: Persons hired into this title must have a permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability. You must provide your valid U.S. driver’s license AND proof of automobile insurance at the time of processing
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions
- Work performed using ladders or a bucket on a lift truck or van
- Work performed at great heights with the use of safety belts and body harness
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Substantial lifting (up to 50 pounds) is required
- Ability to stand and walk for extended or continuous periods of time
- Ability to quickly bend, stretch, twist or each out with one’s body, arms and/or legs
- Ability to access work locations to mount signs
- Ability to tolerate heights while working
- Ability to operate applicable hand tools, power tools and equipment

- Computers and peripheral equipment (e.g., personal computer, computer terminals, hand-held computer, scanner)

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires applicants to complete a written test / skills assessment. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been analyzed and compiled. Applicants who receive a passing score on the test will be hired in lottery/random order.
*Candidates that have experience in assembling or hanging signs and/or as a carpenter, sheet metal worker or construction laborer operating a variety of hand-held power tools are preferred*
Salary: $30.04/Hourly
