General Information

Discovery Club is a Saint Paul Public Schools' program providing out-of-school time child care in a safe, fun, caring environment that supports children’s learning and development.

Position Summary

Responsible for the day-to-day coordination of the operation of a Discovery Club site and for the supervision of site staff.

Reporting Relationships

Works under the general supervision of the Discovery Club Supervisor and Program Manager. Provides general supervision to educational and teaching assistants and hourly staff working at the Discovery Site.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Child Development, Early Childhood, K-6 Education, or a comparable content area.
  • A minimum of 2080 hours supervised experience with children.
  • Two years of experience in the coordination of programs serving preschool or school-age children, including providing day-to-day work direction and mentoring of staff.

  • Must demonstrate continued professional development through in-service and/or course work.

  • Ability to plan and coordinate appropriate educational/recreational experiences for 4-12 year old children that comply with program, district, Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and DHS (Department of Human Services) rules and guidelines, as well as, best practices in the field.

  • Ability to supervise and coach program staff in planning and implementing effective program experiences for all children enrolled.

Responsibilities

The essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the fundamental duties listed below.

  • Coordinate the Discovery Club siteprogram using sound supervisory concepts and techniques and best practices.
  • Implement the policies, and procedures of the District and Discovery Club. Actively support District and Discovery Club goals.
  • Coordinate child accountability and supervision of children procedures in order to track student whereabouts at all times and ensure appropriate supervision of children.
  • Follow and coordinate the established Nutrition Services procedures (i.e., snack counts, sanitation).
  • Implement accommodations for students with special needs and modify activities as needed to ensure respectful inclusion. Attend parent/guardian and Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings to plan for inclusion and the addressing of concerns.
  • Comply with Department of Human Services requirements by enforcing staff training requirements; accessing, creating, and maintaining staff and student records for the annual audit; being the site contact for annual inspections; staffing sites to maintain legal ratio requirements, and meet health and safety requirements, including site crisis plans and drill logs; complying with illness, injury, and abuse reporting requirements and complying with correction orders given by DHS after certification audits and inspections.
  • In conjunction with Human Resources, recruit, interview, hire and on-board staff.
  • Supervise a staff of approximately seven to twenty (primarily part-time hourly staff). Address the performance of staff on a daily basis through coaching, training, directing, evaluating, and managing performance concerns including and up to investigative meetings.
  • Develop staff assignments and meeting agendas; lead meetings.
  • Provide site leadership to Discovery Club site program staff in behavior guidance and disciplinary action.
  • Manage and monitor the site budget in five different areas- instructional supplies, non-instructional supplies, food, fieldtrips, and bussing.
  • Enroll children based on maintaining appropriate student/staff ratios.
  • Interact directly with children.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and school personnel, with agencies, and with children and their parents/guardians who represent a wide range of social, economic, racial, and ethnic groups.
  • Serve as a liaison person between Discovery Club and other school district staff and programs; prepare reports as requested.
  • Serve on and contribute to committees as needed by the program (e.g., staff development, non-school day planning, marketing and related topics).

Responsibilities (continues)

  • Assist with program activities (e.g., Parent/Teacher Organization meetings, Open Houses, School Fair, and related activities). Attend evening and occasional weekend commitments for trainings, meetings, and representation at district and community events.
  • Assist with coordinating large non-school day sites; develop programming and staffing plans for that site.
  • Contribute to the District’s Strong Schools, Strong Communities efforts by partnering with other staff to contribute to student achievement and the alignment and sustainability of resources.
  • Be trained as an Endorsed Assessor of the Youth Program Quality Assessment, a 60 point assessment tool, to assess the quality of sites, combine multiple data sets (staff, student and parent surveys, enrollment data, etc.), set goals based on the data, and enforce action steps towards those goals with staff.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
