The Social Media Specialist works collaboratively and strategically to help manage the social media presence for the Weldon Cooper Center and all its related units. The incumbent will develop content that supports the social media strategy for the Cooper Center, its Research Collaborative (comprising the Center for Survey Research, the Demographics Research Group, and the Center for Economic & Policy Studies), the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership, and the Virginia Institute of Government.

The position requires creation, publishing, and curation of content as well as capturing the voice of Cooper Center brand/s in social post copy. You will create or commission, schedule and post social media content; monitor and respond to social media commentary on behalf of our units; track and analyze resulting engagement; and seek to increase that engagement on all social media platforms.

This role requires a thorough understanding of the ever-changing social media landscape, social media analytics, customer service, storytelling and digital multimedia. A desire to work in public service and a demonstrated interest in government or community engagement is preferred.

Essential Job Responsibilities:


  • Create audience-centered, meaningful and engaging social media content across a variety of social media platforms that increases engagement and visibility of the Cooper Center and its units
  • Manage and maintain the social media calendar to ensure frequent and relevant content in support of a variety of programs
  • Monitor, manage and report on comments, private messages, interactions, engagement and paid social media efforts and moderate, reply, or escalate as appropriate
  • Manage paid social efforts. Devise strategy for paid social/boosting as needed to increase program enrollment or brand awareness
  • Analyze data to provide the team with strategic insights, including engagement rate, impressions, ROI, etc
  • Collaborate with team members to develop multimedia content packages and rollout strategies optimized for social media. Engage in creative brainstorming sessions to provide content inspiration, insights and trends
  • Attend and promote some events, producing or collecting digital collateral to highlight on social media
  • Learn and apply the UVA brand as appropriate
  • Stay informed about industry competitors and current best-practices and trends in social media and digital marketing.



Required Qualifications:


  • Education: Bachelors Degree
  • Experience: Two years of experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of marketing on social platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and LinkedIn.
  • Exceptional attention to detail as well as demonstrated communication, listening, writing and proofing skills. Able to summarize complex concepts in order to develop content in a clear and easy to understand format.
  • An eye for photography, video, and visuals used in social media.
  • Experience sourcing and deploying user-generated video and other content.
  • Ability to interpret social media analytics and identify opportunities to leverage or adapt to increase awareness and engagement.
  • Able to manage diverse workload; skilled at handling multiple priorities in a shifting social media landscape.
  • Creative and critical thinker with a constant desire to learn.
  • Flexibility and willingness to handle other marketing and communication duties as assigned. Contributes to other marketing efforts as able/needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with people from a wide variety of offices and backgrounds and maintain a positive atmosphere while working under time constraints and deadlines.



Preferred Qualifications:


  • Excellent command over written English and AP Style (or a desire to learn AP Style)
  • Ability to create visuals using Canva, Adobe, or other software and leveraging their features within social platforms
  • Knowledge of the general functionality of a website CMS is desired.
  • Knowledge of SEO or a desire to learn the basics of SEO.
  • Fundraising experience a plus.



Please Note:


  • Flexibility to be available for on-call support for communications to address emergencies
  • In office at least two days a week, subject to change
  • Expected to be available for events; occasional evenings and weekends required



This position is Hybrid , lo cated in Charlottesville, VA .

The anticipated start date is June 2023.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $48,000-52,000 commensurate with education and experience.
