JOB TITLE: Social Services Coordinator
DEPARTMENT: Refugee Representation

JOB CLASSIFICATION: Full Time; Non-Exempt; Union
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The social services coordinator will work with in-house and pro bono attorneys to address the social service needs of asylum seekers receiving legal assistance from Human Rights First’s Refugee Representation team, which provides in-house and pro bono legal assistance to asylum seekers, primarily in Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C. The social services coordinator will work with Human Rights First clients to identify needs and gaps in services and assist clients in accessing services related to public benefits, education, health, mental health, housing, and other basic needs. The social services coordinator will primarily support clients in the Los Angeles area, with more limited support to clients in Human Rights First’s other service areas.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and maintain a knowledge base of social services available to clients in assigned work areas.
- Develop relationships with community coalitions in areas of high client concentration.
- Establish working relationships and partnerships with local service providers and administrators to enhance the referral process.
- Conduct assessments of referred clients to determine their psycho-social needs and assist them with appropriate referrals.
- Maintain documentation regarding attempts to access services and service delivery.
- Track and report client data, outreach actions, and outcomes.
- Complete referrals to services, assist families in completing intake requirements for these services, and follow up as necessary.
- Identify clients eligible for enrollment in donation-based programs, such as Family-to-Family, holiday drives, back to school drives, or other programs, and administer and distribute donations received through those programs.
- Assist with efforts to secure and maintain funding for social services and the Client Emergency Fund, including tracking and reporting data relevant to funding.
- Assist Human Rights First legal staff on working with asylum seekers in crisis and transition.
- Assist with training and support on relevant topics for Human Rights First staff, pro bono attorneys, and community stakeholders.
- Supervise interns and volunteers.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & EXPERIENCE:
- Undergraduate degree in Social Work or related field.
- 2+ years of professional case management experience working with immigrant populations; experience working with asylum seekers and survivors of trauma or abuse preferred.
- Advanced fluency in English and Spanish, spoken and written, required.
- Ability to work collaboratively, and preferably, prior experience working with attorneys, law firms, or other legal service providers.
- A strong record of intercultural responsiveness, sensitivity and awareness, and cross-cultural communication skills.
- Experience working with a diverse team and advocating on behalf of clients.
- Experience working with and accessing community resources.
- Demonstrated initiative and creativity in working on dynamic projects across and within organizations.
- Ability to communicate patiently, respectfully, and empathetically with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, including survivors of trauma or torture.
- Experience conducting trainings to diverse audiences in person and/or virtually.
- Ability to network with local coalitions to establish strong relationships to allow for cross referrals.
- Ability to travel locally, as needed.
- Commitment to human rights and social justice issues.
