Job description

The Company
Wolfe, LLC, is an e-commerce company, located in Pittsburgh, PA, focused on next-generation gifting business models.
We are well known for being the company that started the first coupon website in 1995 which sold to a public company in 2000, at the peak of the dot-com era, when we were delivering 20 million page views per month. We then built Direct Response Technologies; grew it to 70 employees; and sold it to Digital River in 2006. We spun off Jambo Media with our tech team and sold it to Undertone in 2012.
We built and focused on GiftCards.com (http://giftcards.com/) from 2006 to 2016 and sold it to Blackhawk Network. We had over 100 employees.
Since 2016, our focus has been Gift Card Granny, PerfectGift, and GiftYa. We have roughly 150 employees and contractors. We are experiencing triple digit growth year over year for 3 years, thankfully. Our organization is committed to a positive work environment, and we prioritize our culture to continue to facilitate our high performance as a cohesive culturally enlightened team. We use OfficeVibe, Bonusly, and other leading tech tools to ensure our initiatives are effective.

The Role
The scope of the Software Engineering Manager is a team of developers that's responsible for a conceptual slice of our business. This slice may be a specific application, like Gift Card Granny, or a higher-level business system, like Merchant Onboarding or Solution Integration. In either case, the SEM owns this slice end-to-end, from planning through development and deployment, and on to production operation, maintenance, and support.
Software Engineering Managers must look internally at their team, as well as externally to the rest of the organization. At Wolfe, priorities are set by the Product Owners, but the SEM represents the technical roadmap during the prioritization process. The SEM also directs the internal management of the team to ensure quality software, including technical planning, pull request management, release management, and process improvement.
The Right Fit
You consider the big picture while still advising on the details. You're great at facilitating communication between different teams because you're good at working with people and can consider other points of view. At the same time, you're decisive and have your own opinions about how your team and your application should function.
You've spent time as a software developer, so you're empathetic to the needs and challenges of the developers on your team. On the other side of the coin, you have the wherewithal to sort out gaps in skill, environmental problems, or under-performers.
You appreciate data, whether it's the throughput of your team or the performance of your application, you know your numbers and, more importantly, the bottlenecks that the numbers reveal.
Our Development Team
The Wolfe and QA Team agrees to these principles:
Production Insight - We don't just write software, we run software. We ensure our applications and systems are working, and maintain insight into how they're performing and how they're being used.
Developer Accountability - “Done” means live, out to the world, in front of the people that are going to use it. We need people to own their work from implementation planning, through release, to on-going production awareness.
Tight Development Loop - It's cheaper to solve problems and answer questions closer to where they arise, so we have a great interest in quick reviews, quick releases, and quick adjustments.
Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for technical management of an eCommerce application, including work assignments and timelines
  • Oversee a team of 3-6 developers, DevOps, and QA members
  • Work with Product Owners to maintain a product roadmap and strategy
  • Facilitate technical implementation planning with the developers on the team
  • Assume responsibility for production insight and operating the application
  • Adhere to the prescribed Kanban methodology, enhance the process for your teams specific needs
  • Most managers contribute to the code at some level. Be ready to roll up your sleeves from time to time

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years leading a software development team
  • 5+ years in software development
  • Hands-on experience with web technologies, eCommerce a plus
  • Bachelor of Computer Science or comparable work experience
  • Experience with some of our technology stack and tools: PHP/Symfony, React, Material UI, queues/workers, AWS, ECS/EKS, SumoLogic, DataDog, SumoLogic, BitBucket pipelines.
  • Knowledge of software development best practices
  • Experience in an agile environment, preferably Kanban
