School Adjustment Counselors/School Social Workers assist students with mental health issues, behavioral issues, positive behavioral supports, academic and classroom support.Responsibilities:This position's primary responsibility is to provide direct supports and services to the students within the SAIL program; requiring experience, interest and expertise in working with students with Autism and related disabilities.Promote student motivation and engagement:Individualize interventions-Plan appropriate Individualized Education Programs for student with disabilities-write social-emotional goals and accommodations.Coordinate with lead teachers on management of student and classroom behavior-conduct observations and formulate behavior plans as needed.Monitor student progress-complete progress reports for each trimester/quarter according to students social emotional goal.Promote Positive Behavior and Mental Health:Improve students communication and social skills-Teach and support social-emotional learningAssess student emotional and behavioral needs.Provide individual and group counselingPromote problem solving, anger management and conflict resolution.Reinforce positive coping skills and resiliencePromote positive peer relationships and social problem solvingConduct risk assessments as needed to assist family with necessary interventionsPromote Parent Involvement and Community Collaboration:Make referrals to and help coordinate community services provided in schoolMonitor and effectively communicate with parents about student social emotional progressHelp families understand their childs learning and mental health needsConnect families with community services providers when necessaryMaintain regular communication with students community resources in order to better provide wraparound servicesAttend evaluation team meetings, annuals, reconvene, manifestations, and other student-centered meetings as neededPromote Positive School Climate, Provide Consultation and Analyze Data:Enhance staff understanding and responsiveness to diverse cultures and backgroundsConsult with staff regularly in order to help enhance understanding of student needsGenerate and interpret useful student and school outcome dataCollect and analyze data on risk and protective factors related to student outcomesProvide crisis prevention and intervention servicesMiscellaneous:Participate in professional development opportunities to increase knowledge base and skills, as well as maintain licensure.Attend and participate in department meetings.Maintain the high level of confidentiality and professionalism expected of all faculty.Perform other related tasks or duties at the discretion of the Director of Special Education and/or Principal.Additional Information:Must possess the ability to:Build positive relationships with students in support of their academic and social development.Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.Guide the learning process toward the achievement of IEP goals and establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and the like to communicate these objectives to students.Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.A Master's degree with extensive course work and counseling.Massachusetts certification as a school adjustment counselorExperience in conducting elementary groups, play therapy and other forms of psychotherapy.Individual and group experience working with children and parents.Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (C.O.R.I.) and national background checkSuch alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.Salary/Benefits:Per BEA and BPS contractBedford Public Schools are committed to hiring, mentoring, and retaining a diverse staff.
