Job Title: Speech and Language Therapist
Salary: $75,000 - $85,000
NATURE OF WORK:
The Speech and Language therapist is responsible for the development, implementation, and coordination of an individual’s Speech and Language therapy program. Screening, evaluation, treatment, transition planning, therapeutic intervention, and exit planning is provided for clients identified with deficits that interfere with their ability to use language and communicate in order to perform daily activities or participate at home, school and in the community.

Service Delivery
- Provides targeted, evidence-based therapeutic intervention to facilitate client participation and Speech and Language performance within home and community environments.
- Uses judgment and clinical knowledge to execute individualized treatment programs based on Speech and Language performance deficits in the areas of communication, including articulation, understanding and use of spoken language, social interaction skills, play, and community integration/work.
- Adapts and modifies the environment including assistive technology and training family / caregiver to meet individual needs and to help client function as independently as possible.
- Educate family / caregiver to facilitate skills in areas of communication.
- Monitors and reassess the effects of intervention and the need to continue, modify, or discontinue intervention.
- Document Speech and Language therapy services to ensure accountability of service provision and to meet standards for reimbursement of services as appropriate.
- Collaborates with other disciplines and services for continuity of care.
- Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
- Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs
Education
- Teaches, monitors, and collaborates with educational personnel, community agencies, parents, and clients to increase understanding of the client’s Speech and Language performance.
- Provides continuing education and in-services for parents, caregivers and other community based service providers.
- Provides fieldwork education and supervision for Speech and Language therapy and Speech and Language therapy assistant students.
Professional Growth and Ethics
- Participates in continuing education for professional development to ensure practice consistent with best practice and to meet WA. Licensure requirements.
- Uses professional literature, evidence based research, and continuing education content to make practice decisions.
- Uses professional Code of Ethics and standards of practice to guide ethical decision making in practice.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of human development throughout the lifespan and integrate this with client’s unique developmental status.
- Knowledge and appreciation of the influence of disabilities, socio-cultural and socioeconomic factors on client’s ability to participate in occupations.
- Knowledge and use of Speech and Language therapy theories, models of practice, principles, and evidence based practice to guide intervention decisions.
- Knowledge of the federal, state, local legislation, regulations, policies and procedures that mandate and guide Speech and Language therapy practice.
- Ability to gather and assess outcomes, program evaluation data and apply to modification of services
- Ability to maintain current reporting, documentation, scheduling, and billing in accordance with professional standards, state and local guidelines, and reimbursement requirements.
- Ability to determine the need for a Speech and Language therapy evaluation and to select and administer appropriate assessment tools to evaluate the client.
- Ability to interpret the evaluation data and write a comprehensive report that reflects strengths and barriers to client’s participation and Speech and Language performance.
- Ability to participate collaboratively with multi-disciplinary educational teams to develop Individualized Education Programs to meet client needs.
- Ability to develop appropriate intervention plans based on evaluation information.
- Ability to provide evidence based Speech and Language therapy intervention to improve client’s performance skills and participation.
- Ability to adapt and modify environments, equipment, and materials to facilitate participation.
- Ability to use professional literature, evidence based research, and continuing education content to make best practice decisions.
- Ability to provide legal and ethical supervision of Speech and Language therapy assistants.
- Demonstrate professional skill in effective oral and written communication.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Have successfully completed and graduated from an accredited Speech and Language therapy professional program recognized American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and have completed all fieldwork requirements.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Certification by American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (MS, CCC-SLP or MA, CCC-SLP)
- Current license by the Washington State Department of Health.
- Relevant background checks and fingerprinting
