Job Title: Director of Food & Agri Operations – Eastern US
Reports to (title): VP/COO
Department: Food & Agriculture
Basic Purpose: What is the overall function of the job?

  • Primary leadership role in establishing and growing Food and Agri operations in the Eastern US
  • Overall management of the departmental functions, forecasting, budgeting, financial controls and
approvals Food & Agri locations in Houston, TX, Chicago, IL, Kansas City, KS and Memphis, TN (and others as added)

Key Accountability/Responsibilities: What specifically is this job expected to accomplish?
  • Direct the optimization of human, equipment and financial resources and ensure that they are used
  • appropriately.
  • Assess and execute new processes and procedures that will streamline and increase the throughput
  • of samples, BV’s market share, profile and profitability.
  • Provide recommendations for capital expenditures required within the departments.
  • Evaluate and establish production of high quality defensible data, safely and on time.
  • Ensure proposed or current methods meet current and future regulatory guidelines as well as BV established quality policies and objectives.
  • Oversee maintenance of good working environment, employee engagement and ensure continuous
  • improvement in productivity and efficiency.
  • Adhere to BV Labs Code of Ethics Policy.
  • Act as a positive change agent in supporting BV Labs’s initiatives (operational and cultural).
  • Responsible to deliver the safety, quality and continuous improvement messaging to staff to ensure support for all initiatives scheduled throughout the year.
  • Ensure staffing plans are in place and staff levels are adjusted to meet operations and budgetary requirements. Make recommendations for the recruitment of full time, part time and contract staff.
  • Track and justify expenditures and create ways to optimize financial resources. Develop and ensure tracking of Key Performance Indicators that measures items that have a direct impact on budgets including efficiency, capacity, and profitability.
  • Provide the resources needed to ensure the proper implementation of Quality assurance protocols, and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) programs

Skills and Knowledge: What skills and knowledge are used to carry out job responsibilities and solve problems?
Attributes: Ambitious, resourceful, independent, results oriented, innovative, dynamic, creative, energetic, motivational, analytical, ethical and collaborative.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Eight to ten years of experience in production environment, of which five (5) years are at a managerial
level, with an emphasis on Food Chemistry or Microbiology testing.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of laboratory practices, techniques, processes and automation.
  • Familiar with ISO 17025 requirements

Computer Skills: Microsoft office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access); LIMS

Education:
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Food Science, Chemistry, Microbiology or related discipline.

Leadership Skills:
  • Demonstrated success in a Leadership Role in Laboratory Operations.
  • Proven leadership, coaching, mentoring and training skills.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, effective influencing and negotiating skills
  • A team player – able to maintain positive, trust-based relationships with staff at all levels throughout the organization; strong in character and confident in action.
  • Performs well in a busy operation and remains calm under pressure.
  • Demonstrated financial, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing environment and balancing business and corporate needs to meet
changing priorities.
  • Accurately follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), company policies and guidelines.
  • Results –oriented, dynamic self-starter with a positive outlook and “can-do” attitude and strong time management skills.

  • Direct Reports: Supervisors, managers, sales and customer service
  • Internal Contacts: Sales, Customer Service, Scientific Services, Corporate Services (QA, Health & Safety, Human Resources, Finance), Executive Management, staff in various locations.
  • External Contacts: Clients, Suppliers, Prospective Employees, Prospective Clients, Auditors, Regulators.

Working Conditions: physical work environment, physical and mental effort, visual and listening attention, and travel
  • High level of work production in laboratory environment and business setting.
  • General office and laboratory environment.
  • Periodic travel to various regional laboratories, meetings with clients, and attending trade shows which includes multiple overnight stays.
  • Evenings, weekends, out of town travel.
